The Commodore came out of our search for a medium-bodied American Stout. The recipe began at our R&D pilot brewery, but quickly became a favorite of our crew. Strong flavors of roast coffee and bittersweet chocolate balance with light citrusy hop aromas, highlighted by a crisp, bitter finish. One sip of this gold medal-winning stout will have you ready to take command of your own fleet.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/8/2015. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Great appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, herbal, floral, pine, light dark fruit/licorice/molasses, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, herbal, floral, pine, light dark fruit/licorice/molasses, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, herbal, floral, pine, smoke, char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Predominant roast throughout the aroma and flavor. Pours near black with brown head that lingers and slowly falls away. Oily and finishes bitter and dry.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Black with very nice two fingers of tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, a little licorice, light floral. Tastes of dark chocolate, bitter roasty notes, some coffee, a bit floral. Medium body with a dry finish.

12 oz bottle purchased at Plaza Liquor in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is an opaque black brown with a well formed one inch tan head. The head falls with nice lace. The aroma is clean roast, toast malt, soft caramel and fresh pine towards the back. The taste is a blend of the fresh pine hop with the roast malt, almost towards char and finishes dry with nice earth mineral. The palate is medium bodied with active carbonation and the dry mineral crisp finish. Exactly how I like my stouts, roasty and easy drinking.

Bottle. Black with a modest light tan had. Lots of standard dark roast aromas and flavors. Some bitter coffee and campfire at the end. Smooth palate.

12oz bottle. Opaque brown black body. Steady beige head. Really awesome, well executed Stout. Rich and roasty, lots of specialty malt flavor, but with a nice hop balance that teeters over into Black IPA if you want. Full bodied without being overbearing or imperial. Smooth on the palate,crisp, cool hop bite. Really good.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with full tan head of big bubbles. Aromas of dark chocolate, dry dark coffee, and dry roasted malts with just a hint of vanilla. Flavors of dark acidic coffee, dark bitter chocolate and dry roasted malts with a hint of resin. A little bit of sweetness would make it a winner.

Bottle from Stone in Asagaya. Pours a soy sauce black with a one-finger tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. Dark cacao, deep roasted malt and light pine notes on the nose. Medium body with medium to light carbonation. Roasty and bitter on the palate. Finishes super dry and coats the mouth fairly well. Bottle. Black beer. I am surprised this is rated so highly I do not find anything special about it. When I color it does have a good palate and some lacing head. Flavor and aroma are very simple and one dimensional with heavily roasted almost burnt malt flavor and no complexity at all. the palate is good but there’s not a lot going on here and there is nothing unique in the style that cannot be found in many other beers of the style.

Pours black into an English pint. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Roasted chocolate and nut aromas. Thin to medium bodied with smoky chocolate and espresso upfront turning dry in the lasting, bitter chocolate finish. Nice.
