The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

650 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.0%. Pitch black colour, moderate creamy tan head. Intense aroma of cocoa / chocolate. The flavour has also loads of chocolate and cocoa, but the sweetness is not too extreme. Also some roasted coffee notes. A moderate hoppy bitterness in the finish (Chinook and Willamette) balances some of the chocolate sweetness. Very drinkable for an 11% beer. I had no problem finishing the bottle - but if you hate chocolate, this is clearly not a beer for you.

Bottle from Brewdog.com. Poured a near enough black colour with a smallish tan head. The aroma was really quite something, just a full on chocolate attack on the nasal pipes. The flavour was sweet, rich and similarly choco laden, with some notes of coffee, roasted malt and dark fruits. Booze factor was well smothered with some bitterness lurking towards the finish. One for the true choc fiends. I dug it.

Bottle at Brewdog bar, Aberdeen. It pours opaque black with low to moderate carbonation and a thin foamy tan head. The nose is pungent milk and dark chocolate, caramel, chocolate cake and alcohol. The taste is in-your-face chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, nut, caramel, obvious alcohol and even more chocolate. In the mouth it is super-thick, sticky and syrupy. A bit of a let down, it is way too alcoholic and the sticky-sweet chocolate over-powers everything.

Deep, black color; the head reduces to a small creamy layer. Immediately the chocolate aroma spreads in the room, it reminds me the one used for Easter eggs, not the best quality; anyway, the aroma is deep. Full bodied, with a good, sweet, caramel and chocolate flavor, very strong; here the chocolate is less cheap than the aroma. It really gives the impression of drinking cold, dark chocolate, extremely powerful, everything is well blended. Very good.

Appearance: Coal black with a small tan head and some light lacing left in the glass
Aroma: Roasted malts, rich dark chocolate and some light smokiness
Taste: Silky mouthfeel of dark roasted malts, cocoa, ashy, coffee with some mild bitterness in the finish
Wow, this is a great Imperial Stout and very easy to drink. The alcohol is very well hidden.

too much, thats the only description i need for this one, just too much, if youre planning on giving this a try, make sure you have about 4 buddies with you to help you out, so rich, so sweet, there was no way i was going to finish even a pint of it.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is pure liquid dark chocolate with a touch of sweetness. Flavour of rich, deep dark chocolate with a perfect balance between sweet and bitter. Must be the best chocolate stout I've had yet.

Review from notes, sampled 2/3/2008 Pours black but lets a little light through if held up to the light. Tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is Chocolate with a capitol C. Smells more like Hershey’s syrup than an imperial stout. I pickup some dark chocolates as well. Taste follows the smell, but adds some alcohol as well. Mouthfeel is smooth velvety creamy. Has an almost artificial chocolate aftertaste. Great brew. I couldn’t drink to many of these, its a bit sweet, but great dessert drink.
