“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Opaque black beer. Low carbonation. Soft silky smooth beer. Immediate and strong dark and milk chocolate. Some lactose sweetness. A little bitter fresh hop in the smooth chocolate finish keeps things interesting! Southern Tier, definitely one of my favourite US brewers!

Tap at Mugs. Pours opaque black with a thick, creamy, dark brown head that sticks around. Intense aroma of dark chocolate, tobacco and roasted malts. Flavor is sweet with loads of chocolate and dark malts. Full bodied with average carbonation. Finishes sweet with mocha and lingering roast notes, along with some dry bitterness. Delicious beer.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma has notes of chocolate - seemingly poor quality. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of chocolate on a malty background, leading to a dry chocolaty finish.

Bottle. Pours black tar. Nose is dense chocolate and some roasted malts. Taste is very similar with lots of licorice. A bit sticky. Tasty though.

bottle, pours black no head. Aroma is all chocolate, like nestle quick. Flavor is a tad of roasted malt and the rest all sweet milk chocolate. Tons of yoohoo flavors going on, little bitterness. More of a sweet stout than imperial, except for the well masked alcohol.

(Draught at Ölbaren, Copenhagen, 18 June 2010) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Chocolatey, roasted nose with dark chocolate and cocoa. Malty, roasted taste with loads of chocolate and cocoa, notes of coffee. Full bodied and sweet with a certain alcohol bite and a generous cocoa bitterness. Definitely a bit one dimensional, but with an impressive chocolate character. Very nice and tasty in moderate amounts.

Immense and obvious smell of chocolate syrup, with dark chocolate accents. Black pour, thin tan head. Very chocolatey flavor, with a bit of dates. Finishes bitter, which feels like it comes from the chocolate instead of any hops. I often find myself wanting more chocolate from my imperial stouts, but I think this overcompensates. It also doesn’t blend well with the malt used. It’s still pretty enjoyable and not as rich as the Souther Tier Creme Brulee, which I feared it might be. Absolutely better warm. Full bodied, but easy on the palate.

Bottle, $7.99 from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours a deep dark brown with an inch of tan frothy head. Sweet chocolates in the nose. Hell of a chocolate punch! Liquid chocolate... bittersweet and glorious.

Bottle from a trade with tgncc. Pours black with brown head. Aroma is all chocolate. It reminds me of the Hershey’s chocolate powder we used to make chocolate milk when I was a kid. We would open up the can and just sit there and smell the chocolate. Flavors of roasted malts and ........ you guessed it, chocolate. Very sweet milk chocolate. Full body with soft carbonation and a silky mouthfeel. An excellent desert beer. Thanks Tom.
