“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottled 660 ml at Beer Hunters
Opaque black, not much head. Intensive dark chocolate, some coffee, aromas are not artifical. Medium bodied. Chunks of dark chocolate, some alcohol and burned dark malts. Light hoppyness. The most chocolaty beer I’ve ever had. Nice dessert beer although could be more balanced.

Dark maroon that light penetrates easily. Brown head that disappears completely and leaves scant lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate and vanilla. Flavor is Hershey bar and chocolate covered cherries, medium body, dryish and bitter finish. More chocolate than beer.

Bottle at RBESG 09 Sheffield. Like fresh chocolate sponge cake. Along with the Mikkeller Stella, my beer of the day and worth doing all the other rubbish for. Light and agile and great and I would easily drink a whole bottle of this.

Draught. Loads of chocolate in the aroma and flavor. Flavor is also sweet, some baking chocolate and real cocoa flavor. Very rich, and the alcohol is there in the flavor and felt on the planet. A thick, heavy beer.

Bottle @ RBESG Grand Tasting 2009. Almost black and opague. Loads of chocolate and cacao powder in the aroma. Sweet chocolate milk flavor, leaving little room for anything else. Just a bit of roast in the aftertaste. Onedimensional, but very nice indeed.

RBESG Sheffield 2009 Grand Tasting at the Harlequin. Deep dark brown to black colour, light beige head. Aroma of rich milk chocolate, sooooo nice. Flavour is chocolate sauce, chocolate milk, sweet, light bitter chocolate finish. Medium bodied. Amazing, pure f*ing chocolate all over. Since I’ve only had a few tastes of it, I can’t judge the drinkability of this, but I would love to try a whole bottle of this stuff.
