“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Theis/BrianK. Clear dark brown with a distinct reddish hue. Small off-white head. Distinct chocolate aroma - artificial? Medium body, hard roasted malt and again very distinct notes of chocolate and cocoa. Fairly malt bitter finish. 010509

Bottle from Wine Specialist. Very dark brown/black color with a decent tan head. The aroma is simply chocolate. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavor is darkish milk chocolate with quickly following toasted malt. But the chocolate is ever present. The barely noticeable heat suggests a cordial filled chocolate. The finish is pretty chocolate.

3/2011 - A lovely beer that I look forward to coming out every year. A very good bottle but the draft is truly incredible. Like drinking alcoholic Hershey’s syrup but in a good way. Despite my dedication to variety this is one of the few beers I will order back to back. ++++Sampled on draft at D’s in Regent Square this beer poured thick and black with a small brown head. The aroma was incredibly strong sweet chocolate syrup. The flavor was a marvelous blend of chocolate syrup, toasty malts, a touch of molasses and a hint of port wine. The finish was long sweet dark chocolate. Beergasm!

22 oz bottle. Pours very black with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and heavy on the candy bars. Flavor is great. Like a liquid Three Musketeers with alcohol. The alcohol is not that noticeable for a beer that is 11 percent.

Pour is a dark black with a small tan head. Aroma is super sweet chocolate like the best hot cocoa you have ever had in your life. Flavor is is again a super rich chocolate with maybe some roasted nuts toward the end. Very tasty and dangerously drinkable even at 11%.

Aged 1 year. Pours deep black with mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head recedes to hug rim. Dark chocolate, espresso, and vanilla aromas. Tingly cocoa upfront with rich chocolate liqueur and espresso in the finish.
