“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has strong notes of mocca, caramel, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of strong notes of chocolate, mocca, malt, roasted malt, and vanilla, leading to a dry mocca and chocolate finish.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a very dark brown - close to black - with a tint of red and a small beige head. Sweet aroma of vanilla sugar and artificial chocolate accents. Medium body, hard roasted malts and sweet chocolate and vanilla. Some alcohol in the finish. Not so good, and not very coffeeish. 161209

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dirty brown foamy head with good retention and some great lacing. Aroma of nice black chocolate malt with nice creamy espresso notes. Taste is a nice mix between some very well balanced black chocolate and some creamy espresso with a nice dose of lactic sugar. Body is full with nice carbonation and a great creamy texture. Very well done with all the ingredient well balanced out and doesn’t taste too artificial.

Very dark with a tan head. Sweet chocolate aroma with malts and molasses. Flavor was over the top sweet chocolate. Too much for me- way too much. Some molasses and light roasted notes, but the sugary, chocolate sweetness kills it. I found it hard to drink this sticky, syrupy brew. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad beer, it’s just not something I enjoy.

Bottle @ HjHansen, Odense. Pours black with a creamy brown head and lacings. Nose and taste is roasted coffee and cocoa powder. Quite a lot of cold coffee and chocolate pudding. A bit sweet, cloying artificial and one dimensional.

Bottle from Archer Liquor. Pours very dark brown/black with a large fluffy tan head. Aroma is mostly chocolate over coffee and darker fruits. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavor is chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and burnt toast in that order. Finishes quite delicious like "mocha", but in a thick dark way. Yum!
