The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle from Beermerchants.com. Pours a very deep brown with a tan head. Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts. Flavours of chocolate ice cream, dark roast coffee, more chocolate, brown sugar. Finishes smooth and frothy with a creamy vanilla tang. Yum!

650 ml bottle at Haket, GöteborgOn September 12, 2009Black color, small tan head (small due to the fat from the chocolate perhaps?) Apelsinkrokant/orange with chocolate scent. Salty, acidic, bitter, chocolate taste. Long dry bitter chocolate aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.

Courtesy of tpd975. Pours deep dark with brown edges and tan head. The aroma is easily noticed feet away carrying up notes of mild chocolate, caramel, syrupy extract sweetness, a thin layer of coffee and lots of sweet nuttiness. The taste has the rich assortment of a box of chocolate candy and then moving toward mild notes of coffee and caramel. Very rich brew.

Draught at MacGregors in Henrietta. Pitch black with a fine, rocky head. Big chocolate and coffee aroma: not much else, but it’s nice. Again, huge chocolate/cocoa flavor, with coffee and roasted malts, a touch of sour. A bit too sweet, but with a nicely bitter finish. Big-time creaminess. Delicious, but where’s the beer? I’m caught--I love it, but it doesn’t taste at all like beer to me!

Total black; big creamy head. It has an unmistakeable chocolate aroma, like entering a chocolate and candy shop, even if the tendency to the vanilla is not thrilling for me; also, coffee liquor (alcohol). The body is very strong, well structured, powerful, with traces of alcohol, immediately tickling the tongue and warm; excellent chocolate flavor that overwhelms everything else (caramel and traces of roasted malt); there is some residual sugar; the final is powerful but possibly balanced. Very well constructed and extremely pleasant.

Bottle from Once Upon a Vine South on 06/27/2009. Dark black body with a medium creamy light brown head. Big chocolate aroma with light coffee in the background, light roast and light bitterness. Big sweet chocolate flavor with some coffee notes, faint roast, caramel and some mild bitter in the finish. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. Hides the alcohol well.

Overall Impression: Another beer I'd been meaning to rate, had a bit of a friend's bottle last week at the Brickskeller, and it reminded me I need to rate this one. This is a really tasty stout, nice coffee flavor. A good brew all around.

This was just crazy. I had this beer on tap at Sunswick in Queens, NYC. Beer was big and delicious. Color was pure dark brown. The rich chocolate and coffee aroma permeated the medium beige head. And the flavor was incomperable. I got much more chocolate than coffee, which was fine by me. I almost forgot I was drinking beer; it felt more like a chocolate milk, minus the lactose. Overall an amazingly deep, rich beer.

couresty of cartdan get the best of Jahva and Choklat. pours black with beige head. aroma had ample chocolate, malts, some coffee. taste, chocolate was more forward and present, coffee was noticeable but remained hidden. Boozy palate with a light bittersweet finish and hints of coffee.
