“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle Pours out a dark brown topped with a cream head. Aroma of sweet milk chocolate and coffee. Tast was more of the sweetness and roast malts. Very smooth. Another tast brew from Southern Tier.

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep black with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, espresso, roasted malts, alcohol. Flavor is solid. Chocolates, espresso, malts, vanilla. Warming alcohol flavor. I think the mixing of Jahva and Choklat made for a less interesting beer here -unlike their Gemini which made for a more interesting combination.

Bottle: Dark brown pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is a wonderful blend of milk chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. Sweet, yet roasty. Rich flavor is full of chocolate, roasted malts, and espresso. Lingering bitters and a creamy, mouth-coating sweetness. Another ST brew that really fits the description ver batum. I really liked Choklat and Jah-va was also very good, but this wasn’t quite on the same level. Still quite good. Thanks skinnyguy!

Pours black into a snifter. Beige head with good retention recedes to hug rim. Chocolate and espresso aromas. Thick with sweet cocoas and cream. Turns to espresso in the lasting coffee finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

On draught at Brews Cafe, served in a chalice. This hybrid Imperial Stout pours flat black with a medium thick and foamy light brown head that recedes slowly. Vanilla mocha aroma. Rich and sweet body with flavors of milk chocolate, espresso and vanilla. The finish is assertively sweet cocoa and chocolate offset by moderately bitter coffee aftertaste. Definitely a sipper and an interesting beer, but honestly less than the sum of the 2 beers from whence it came.

Bubbly black beautiful pour. On tap at the Vintage Estates, nice place. Choco aroma, choco liqour taste, rather smooth. You can tell this has choklat roots. Almost like chocolate coffee and whisky on ice cream. Tho strong, alky sensation provides a warming effect on the palate. Not bad for a high abv stout. Finish is choco and alky, darker choco alky.

Dark brown pour, with a surprisingly bright white lace - quite similar to Choklat in the nose (a lot of bittersweet bakers chocolate and sweet cream), but with a sharp coffee bitterness underneath, and a bit of a booziness - fairly light-bodied for the style, with fairly well-masked alcohol, making it dangerously easy to drink - tastes very much like a muted version of Choklat - chocolate flavor and sweetness that lacks the richness of their other imperial stouts - the sweetness is cut by the roast and bitterness of the coffee beans, but the coffee tastes cheap and poorly roasted - even the chocolate seems to be of poorer quality than in the Choklat, coming across like brownie batter and chocolate syrup - this is a style which hides flaws easily, but this one fails to do that - don’t get me wrong, it is still relatively tasty, there’s just a lot getting in the way of enjoying the beer’s good qualities.
