Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

Draught. Opaque black liquid with medium to big tan head. Aroma of bread, licorice, pumpernickel, chocolate, dark fruit and Belgo yeast esters. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of chocolate, bread and dark fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Bottle. Pours with a massive brown head over a black hued body. Good lace. Aromas are of chocolate, nutty, almond, bakers chocolate, fresh bread, roast, weed, hay, earth and smoke. Flavors are smokey, earthy, chocolate, almond, dark chocolate, coconut (almond joy?), ash, lively mouthfeel. Dry. Odd combination. Not offensive, but odd in its earthy character and yeast balance. Drinkable. Bitter cocoa, smoke, lively carbonation, very dark chocolate, low bitterness. A touch of coconut in the finish. Good, but definitely an odd ball beer.

Pours black into a tulip. Mocha head with little retention recedes to skim surface. Chocolate and sour pit fruit aromas. Soft with sweet dark caramel upfront turning dry in the lasting pit fruit and warming vanilla finish.

Pours very dark brown color with brown head. Chocolate and roasted malt aromas. Roasty and slightly smokey flavors with some earthy and chocolaty tastes. Some dark fruits and an ashy finish. Medium to full body with soft carbonation.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 04/20/2012. Pours not quite opaque black with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of dark malt, coffee and yeast. Medium body with a malty, yeasty character with notes of mild roasted coffee and chocolate. The finish is dark chocolate and malt with a lingering yeast aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle. Pours a chocolate brown with a dense tan head that sticks around for quite a while. Aromas of chocolate and a bit of a chalky edge. Flavor is lovely. Kind of light bodied with full chocolate, some anise and a hint of dark fruit. Mouthfeel is a little chalky.

Whole Foods, P st, DC 750ml ($12): Pours a black body with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt with Belgian yeast, a hint of smoke, and a bit of fruitiness. Taste is much in the same vein: slightly smoky, roasted malts, with subtle Belgian yeast, and mildly bitter hops that linger slightly for a bit. Very little sweetness is to be had here. My own misgiving about this beer is the finish is a little thin. Aside of this, this is a clever stout.

Capped 750 from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown/black with a 4 finger creamy dark tan head. Aroma is mostly chocolate - but there’s a lot of foam in the way. Med+ body. Flavor is chocolate and something like yeast/spice. It’s certainly not sweet. It’s sort of earthy chocolate. I am sure there’re hops in this, but hard to pin them down for flavor. The chocolate keeps getting darker and more bitter. Stout? Maybe a imperial black IPA? There are so many flavors - and I think that smoke is coming out. Anyway, if you want a very tasty, complex ale, this should be considered.
