Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria tap ($6): I don’t feel like writing a review, but here it is: Roasted malts. Alcohol. Awesomeness. Would I know this is a Baltic Porter based on the European examples I have sampled? No, not really. This tastes nothing like some amazing Baltic Porters I’ve had. Is this good? Yes. Yes, it is.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into a shaker. Tan micro head with excellent retention recedes to skim surface. Medium bodies with dark chocolate and alcohol soaked pit fruit upfront. Lasting sweet milk chocolate and resin finish.

Denmark, Aug-Sept 2009. Another great bottle from fonefan. Pours an oily pitch black with a very small dark brown head. Lovely intense aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Sweet roasted malty taste, licorice, chocolate, vanilla. Very nice

Malzig-herber, in Teilen schokoladiger Antrunk. Das Malz wird im Mittelteil eher nussig, Geringe herbe, das Malz wird dabei ein wenig breiter. Trotz des Alkohols süffig, ein wenig hopfig. Dabei bleibt das Malz hinter seinen Möglichkeiten zurück, außerdem ist das Bier recht trocken, vor allem im Abgang. Minimal alkoholisch im Nachgeschmack, sonst herb-schokoladig. Nett! 8/11/10/11/9/11

Pours black with a light brown head that took a few seconds to develop. Little lacing. The aroma has a lot of cocoa and chocolate syrup, some roast and dark fruits, a bit of cola and a touch of smoke. The beer really opened up as it warmed. The beer tastes medium sweet, maybe a bit above that. There’s a lot of chocolatey cola flavor and more dark malt fruitiness. The finish has a mild herbal note and a bit more smoke. It started out a bit thin, but the warmth helped fill things out. It’s a little sticky but not too bad. This is a good Baltic Porter, but I was expecting a bit more. It’s just a little sweet and heavy on the chocolate syrupy flavor. I still like it, but it’s not a world beater.

Bottle @ home. Deep black appearance with almost no head. Roasty, slightly burnt tar, somewhat boozy, dark malty nose. Dark fruits, roasty, burnt rubber, light anise, deep malty flavor. Roasty, chocolatey, taraftertaste. Boozy, asphalt flavor has me wondering about the hype around this beer.

Review from notes sampled 12/14/2007 12oz bottle received in a trade with limesmut. Thanks again Poured a dark brown/black with a tan/brown head that disappeared gradually. Smell is roasty, figgy malts, and a bit of alcohol. Taste is roasty malt with a lactose type sweetness mixed in there. Thick mouthfeel that coats the taste buds after each sip. Respectable brew from Duck Rabbit, I wish I could get their stuff locally. Received in trade from KarrHeel03 and Revisited 12/13/2009 Pours a solid black with a good sized tan head that dissipates quickly to a ring on top and minimal lacing. Smells of dark chocolate and roasted coffee up front, touch of hops and alcohol hidden underneath. Taste is rich with chocolate and dark fruits. I imagine sour cherries and black currant as I sip this one. It proves to be quite sweet but the burn of alcohol in the finish mixed with a distant hop bitterness keeps it from being cloying. Creamy almost syrupy mouthfeel, thick body, light carbonation. I think I enjoyed this a lot more this time around. I have another bottle that I think will age for a while and revisit in a few years. My score reflects this most recent tasting.

Black with a deep tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, rich dark fruits, some coffee, chocolate, and light molasses. Flavor is full of roasted malts, light chocolate, light coffee, molasses, dark fruit, and a faint smoke note. FInishes with an ample amount of bitterness. Would love to have a few rounds of this one.

Slightly charred oak and bark Cola brown, thin tan head, some lace. Bark, molasses, and raisin flavor. Full body, blood consistency, somewhat fizzy. A little overrated, but good.

Bottle with many thanks to Pollack. Pours black with reddish brown head. Nose of roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla coffee and bourbon. Taste is initially sweet chocolate, vanilla and coffee with little bourbon kick and velvet mouth feel. Excellent.
