Defender of the intergalactic downtrodden, conqueror of bad beers and long-winded evildoers, Galactica soars with ease from one star system to the next. Her dual-hop staff disperses justice, freedom, and intense hop flavor. Dry hopped with Galaxy Hops, this Double IPA balances a hop profile of light bitterness and notes of tropical fruit, citrus, and pine with a clean malt backbone.

Oddly old-tasting, like an IPA that’s been sitting around for a year or so, even though the canning date is less than 60 days ago. Starts with a heavy caramel front, mixed with apple and a little grapefruit, then develops an oxidized middle and a very modest finish for a West Coast IPA. Pretty sloppy.

Old school West Coast DIPA by Clown Shoes, brewing on the east coast of the United States. Thanks Craftmember for sharing the can. Moussy, off-white, medium thick, bit irregular but stable head over a misty, very deep and pure orange beer with golden hue and some large bubbles moving upwards. Aroma instantly shouts “West Coast IPA” in a way you do not often encounter them anymore in these hazy times: fresh grapefruit peel, orange pith, toasted onion, mugwort, armpit sweat somewhere, dry biscuit, wormwood, raw red bell pepper, cypress leaves. Clean, rounded onset, sweetish with an early citrusiness (mandarin, pink grapefruit) and a hint of unripe peach, medium carbonated, with very smooth, oily mouthfeel, a tad resinous from the hops; lightly peanutty, cracker- and dry biscuit-like maltiness, quickly overshadowed by a mile long, grapefruity, wormwoody and rooty, somewhat piney, spicy hop bitterness that lasts and lasts without becoming overly harsh – and letting some of that lovely biscuitiness pass through. Wonderfully old school, this is the kind of postmodern IPA I learned to love fifteen-odd years ago; very well made by this trusted brewery (which I hadn’t heard of in quite a few years), crisp, bright and radiant, well-balanced. I love nostalgia so much – have another point for that alone.

Amber, almost clear, fluffy head. Aroma of grass and pine. Taste of honey and melon, backed by a distinct bitterness.

Juicy and nice, but I should not have had this straightaway after a Frost beer. Pic: need a cut?
