This black ale was brewed in collaboration with a Norwegian brewery, Lervig, and the Norwegian black metal band, 1349. Intended as a cross between a double stout and an IPA, 1349 Black Ale has a rich, dry malt character that isn’t very roasty. The hop notes are intended to be piney and spruce-like and the mouthfeel is intended to be dry and astringent. Ethiopian coffee and blackstrap molasses are added in the whirlpool and are treated as layers, not a focal point, while Equinox hops were used as a dry-hop. The label art for the bottles is Plague on the Stairs (1896) by Norwegian artist Theodore Kittelsen.

Bottle shared at Alex's Birthday. Pours a deep brown to black with a small beige head. Fig, raisin, prune and roasted malt aromas. A little oxidized on the palate with molasses, more dark roasted malt and dark fruit. Lingering roasty notes and dark fruit on the finish. ABV hidden fairly well.

Pours a deep, dark, oily black with massive, creamy-tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, toffee, and hops. Flavor is quite boozy--the alcohol content is up-front and not well-hidden. Also, plum/raisin, coffee, chocolate, leather, and a lot of sweetness (almost too much underlying sweetness--goes along with the booziness). Not sure what to make of this. It’s not a stout. It’s not black IPA. It’s something in-between.

Sampled from the Firkin at Happy Gnome Firkin Fest 2015. Pours black with a bubbly dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of leather and dark grains with a decent amount of roasted malts underlying. Flavor has lots of sweet dark grains with some earthy pine, a bit of leather and some sweet toffee in the finish.
