Sample from 2011 and 2012 vintages at the 5th Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/26/2013: Pours dark brown with a medium thin beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky vanilla, bourbon and dark chocolate. The finish is burnt malt and bourbon. Good overall.

2012 bottling Pours a solid black with a decent sized tan head that slowly dissipates. The aroma coming out of my glass is roasty, chocolate, caramel and coffee wrapped in a subtle but evident barrel treatment of vanilla, and sweet bourbon whiskey. The flavor starts off sweet and malty with lots of roast, brown sugar, and chocolate. The barrel notes rush in with vanilla, whiskey, light wood to remind us that this is no ordinary stout. Lingering roasty whiskey with a touch of ethanol burn lasts long after every sip. Thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy creamy mouthfeel. Nice stout, the bourbon adds a nice sweetness that really compliments this version.

66cl Bottle at Sloshfest, 6 of the 2011 bottlings side-by-side. Black colour, beige-brown head. Aroma is a lot sweeter than the 4 Roses, oak, bourbon, hard roasted malts, chocolate, sugar. Flavour is sweet, bourbon, hard roasted malts, coffee, molasses, a little metallic from all the sugar, chocolate, bitter roasted finish. Fullbodied. Lacks a bit of balance.

Bottle @ Armin’s bachelor party. Thanks Armin and Caleb! Pours a deep black appearance with a dark brown head. Really a smooth yet rich whiskey, caramel, huge chocolate, toffee, vanilla aroma. Big chocolate, caramel, mild dark fruity, date, toffee, smooth whiskey flavor. Maybe just a touch behind the 18 year Elijah Craig version due to a touch less in complexity, but this was very nice.

Bottle (#182, 2011) thanks to Bruce at THE Eclipse tasting, 2012. It pours very dark brown, with a small light tan head, which quickly dissipates. The nose is upfront bourbon, vanilla, medicinal aspect, tar, treacle and toffee. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, tar, wood, mellow bourbon, burnt earth, dark fruit, toffee, medicinal, toast and toffee, with a dry, warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and thankfully not too cloying. Well balanced, mellow and flavoursome... good stuff!

THE Eclipse Tasting. Clear dark brown beer, little tan head. Smooth palate, softish. Mild fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts - chocolate and mild vanilla wood. Mellow bourbon. Smooth finish with a trace of dark fruits. Pretty easy going and very drinkable.
