Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet 1.5 Double Black IPA

Hoppy Feet 1.5 Double Black IPA

Clown Shoes in Boston, Massachusetts, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - Black / Cascadian Dark Special Out of Production
Score
7.60
ABV: 10.0% IBU: - Ticks: 63
This is a BIG beer. We basically took the Hoppy Feet recipe and multiplied everything by 1.5. This created a wonderfully unique beer that has a deeper malt balance, bolder hop profile, and an extremely fresh aroma. When comparing to regular Hoppy Feet you will notice much sweeter malt notes mixed in with a more pronounced chocolate and dark fruit flavor. The malt flavors are balanced off with strong pine and citrus notes from the addition of A LOT of hops. This beer was actually dry-hopped not once but TWICE with each of the hop varieties (Columbus, Cascade, and Amarillo).

Location: 22 oz bottle from Spec's - Galleria, 10/16/13

Aroma: The nose is hoppy and chocolaty, citrus notes, some pine, caramel, and roasted malts
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color, beige-brown lace, and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is lightly sweet and medium-plus bitter, with some nice roast for balance
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it has a smooth feel, soft carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: Thought this was a really solid example of a Black IPA. Really tasty. Basically a Black IIPA, which, by the way, is a category I'd love to see exist. Let's see what a bunch of great Cascadian Double Darks would taste like (Who's in on that name? Anyone? Bueller?) Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/20/2013. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, orange rind, cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, light char, toast, floral, pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus hops and roasted malt notes; with nice strength. Taste of big tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, orange rind, cocoa, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, char, floral, pine, toast, and floral/roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, cocoa, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, char, floral, pine, toast, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, chalky, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black IPA! All around great balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors with huge robustness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Shared with Nick. Deep dark brown pour with a lingering tan head. Gorgeous hoppy snout. Stunning flavour that was once more hop-laden with lovely fruit and chocolate notes and superbly smothered booze. A real pleasure to drink. Storming beer.. Er, well that’s right that’s right that’s right I really love your hoppy feet....

Bottle. Deep opaque brown body, medium dense light brown head. Fairly intense nose with sharp grapefruit rind, bread dough, and sweet chocolate. Lots of piny, ashy bittersweet notes in the body, along with grapefruit rind and chocolate. Dense and slick palate. This beer could pass as a hoppy imperial stout. Another winner from Clown Shoes.

Bottle thanks to a trade. Pours a clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with bitter pine hops and a hint of grapefruit. Flavor has strong bitter pine hops and resin throughout with a bit of roasted malt growing through the finish.

Small beige head, rather stable, over red-brown shot, black beer. Woody, bar, solvent and resiny-hoppy, parsley. Very bitter, quinine-like, with a milder finish, featuring roast, scorched brown sugar, (bitter) spiced. Black chocolate, bit resin (if less than aromawise). Pepper, bitter leaves as from chicory. Medium to well-bodied, well-carbonated, hopoily-slick. Good, but it does appears a tad forced.

This one’s for Walt. Pours very dark brown with rich garnet highlights. Roast malt aroma with lots of hops coming through. Full flavor, some sweetness, some bitterness, both in a good balance. Some slick licorice in the finish from the roast malts. Nice beer.

Split a 22oz amongst friends. Poured a almost pitch black color, slight ruby notes when put up to the light, foamy tan head. Aroma was some roasted malts with an ice pine character, touch of citrus. Flavor was some pine needle character, with some chocolate, roasted malts. Overall this one was pretty good with alcohol very well masked for 11%!
