Bottle. Pours opaque deep black with a large brown head and some lacing. Aroma is coffee, dark roasted malt, and cocoa powder. Flavor its the same with medium sweetness, notes of dried fruit, and a light coffee bitterness.

From a 2010 bottle purchased at Arrowwine in Virginia. Beautiful dark color with a short lived tan head. Caramel and chocolate in the flavor. Bitter finish but nicely balanced. A gorgeous beer.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled 11/11/2010. Pours very dense pitch black color with a nice 1-2 finger dense brown head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge very dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, biscuit, toast, char, molasses, vanilla, toffee, earth, wood, and light herbal hops. Fantastic aromas with great complexity, balance, and strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, char, coffee, molasses, caramel, toast, tobacco, biscuit, earth, pine, citrus, and light herbal hops. Decent amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, toast, molasses, citrus, and herbal on the finish for a while. Fantastic roasted flavor balance and complexity. Medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a very nice creamy, slick, thick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost no warming noticed at all after the finish. Very smooth to sip on. Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout. Huge complexity and big robust roasted flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Extremely impressive.

Aroma was not what I expected – a bit weird with cocoa powder and hints of smoke. Flavour has ash, salmiac and some cocoa powder. A disappointment, but good still. Maybe a bad bottle?

Sweet aroma with cocoa and licorice. Flavour has coffee, licorice, cocoa, some saltiness and oaty notes. Yep, it definitely was a bad bottle back then. Now the only flaw is saltiness here, which is a bit over my limit. But just a bit. Didn’t remember that this is so rich – on both palate and flavour.

330 ml bottle bought @ The Cracked Kettle about 1 year ago. Shared at tasting. Pours oily pitch black with a bog frothy and creamy dark brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of trace and lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, vanilla, wood, dried dark sweet fruits, asphalt and alcohol. Taste is intense, sweet and slightly bitter with roasted malts, chocolate, wood, coffee, prunes, raisins, vanilla, tar and hints of black pepper and liquorice. Mouthfeel is smooth, silky, very tiny tart, balanced and full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, coffee, bitter chocolate and hints of pine and liquorice.

Pitch black, opaque beer, creamy strong white head. Sweet malty aroma, coffee, milk chocolate, light vanilla, candied red cherries and fudge. Sweet malty flavour, some burned malts bitterness, roasted flavours. Reminding of Spanish cocoa. Thick silky, oily slick mouthfeel, malty roasted finish.

Bottle at Petrol Stations bottle share. Pours a very dark brown with a small tan head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. Roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a roasted malt chocolate and nice light bitter finish. Really enjoyed this one, an impressive imperial stout from Bells.
