One of the earliest examples of Russian Imperial Stouts in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with aging in mind.

A huge malt body is matched with a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruit and other aromas. The flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages in your cellar.

0.355l bottle. Pitch black body, thin brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, caramel, figs, raisins and cocoa. Taste of chocolate, coffee, plums, raisins and a decent amount of floral hops. Medium to full body, creamy texture. Very nice.

Fair sized sampel from 355 ml. bottle at Gollem. Bottle says 11/06/2015 meaning bottled 6th of November 2015 I assume? Black, solid mocha. Nose is mellow umami, herbal with roast, soy sauce,… taste is mellow herbal umami, some soy sauce, low molasses, roast, touch of blueberry, very long aftertaste which is nice but finish is largely thinner umami, herbal, roast, almost vegetable, some earth in the finish. Thinner than expected syrup & molasses body. Kind of expected a bit more from a beer this big in production & massive in appreciation. Price & distribution probably play a bit roast but this huge umami, burned mushroom & vegetable profile didn’t do it for me. I prefer my RIS with more desert-like coffee & chocolate sweetness. This one was a bit lost on me, I actually started liking it less as it warmed up. I heard that this beer needs a lot of time but I just don’t see this flavours evolving closer to what I like.

Pitch black colored, medium tan creamy head, good lasting. Aroma is of caramel and chocolate, some brown sugar, bit dark fruit, coffee, roasted malt, bit boozy. Taste is medium to very sweet caramel and dark chocolate, some brown sugar, bit dark fruits, roasted malt and coffee, roasted coffee medium+ bitterness, dry roasty finish, some alcohol with warming. Full- bodied, soft- carbonation, creamy. Very fine! Other bottle will be aged for a while... (bottle, Vrutak, Zagreb)

Bottle. Cotteridge, Brum. Not far off black. Film of sticky, tan head. Nose has savoury, roast malts. Some bonfire toffee. Some herbal, grassy hop. Some under ripe berry fruit. Taste is thick, chewy, charcoal sweet. Big, fruity, roast malt bitterness. Lots of bitter tang. Mouthfeel is smooth and fairly bright, given the ABV. Fruity, tangy, roast coffee and chocolate bitter finish. Decent.

Bottle courtesy of Douglas from Portland-USA. BB 2015. Shared in Rome-Italy. Thank you! Black pour, still a brownish lacing. Great. Nose: Cocoa, a bit oxidation, sweet vanilla, just great! Mouth: still a bit frizzy, chocolate and a mild chicory a bit herbal. Great! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled shared by ippopotamo36 (thanks Alberto!). Vintage 2012. Pours deep brown with a minimal head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, licorice, oxidation, olive. Flavour of chocolate, coffee, licorice, bitter in the end. Medium to high body, light carbonation. Oxidated, but still great!

Black with creamy head. Amazing intensity in the aroma and flavour of heavily roasted malts and light vanilla. Very smooth and rich feeling. Balance is great. Not too sweet.
