Anchor Porter became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Pours almost black, rubied, with a huge, dark tan head. Aroma is chocolate/banana.....roast. Taste is creamy, chocolate, light coffee bean, banana, Slight smoke. Spiced bitter that lingers. Exceptionally good.

zwart, met schuimig bruine kraag, schenkt als motorolie aroma: zoet, chocolade, caramout, gebrande mouten, rood fruit, aroma is prima smaken: medium body, stevig bitter, zeer sterk, donkere fruiten, geroosterde- cara- en gebrande mouten, peper, noten. medium body, romig, laag co2, smaak minder als aroma, te bitter en te lang nadrukkelijk aanwezig.

very dark colour, huge beige head - excellent appearance; aroma of chocolate with berries and some roasted malt; taste of roasted sugar, chocolate, fruity freshness (it would be hard to identify one particular fruit), some sourness, hoppy bitterness and spicy alcoholic notes;best porter I have ever tasted (so far)

Bottle at the Brouwcafe, Scheveningen. Poured a dark mahogany, with a thin off white head. The aroma is floral and hoppy leading to a liqourice bitter flavour, with some hoppy bitterness and floral notes on the palate. A little like a black IPA. Super tasty. One of San Francisco’s best.

Bottle at home, from BOE, 11/04/13. Pours a light black with a mahoosive frothy tan head that dissipates slowly. Nose is roast malt, big blast of brown sugars, molasses, cocoa powder, treacle toffee. Taste is rich treacle toffee, roast malt, chocolate notes in the background. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry and roasty in the finish. A solid porter and one I’d happily return to.

Two tall and very cold glasses of this Porter in ’Players’ on Pier 39 in San Fran, 5 Feb 2013. Looked like a posh Guiness: black with ruby red edges, on top a good foaming head of tight tanned bubbles. No aroma or taste at first: far too cold. As the beers warmed the dark chocolate notes began to assert themselves in the nose and mouth, the beer became richer and creamier, no need to freeze the arse off it. Took me a while to drink each glass because of the waiting around for them to warm up, worth the wait though.

Flaske hjemme: et flott skum legger seg over en mørk brunrød øl. Ikke den store aromaen, men smaken er desto bedre - rik, frisk og samtidig balansert og behagelig (noe den fine karboneringen bidrar til). Kaffe og konfektsjokolade med røde bær. Deilig munnfylde og ettersmak selv om vi bare snakker om 5,6%. Rett og slett delicious.
