Anchor Porter became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

355ml bottle from Bitter Virtue, Southampton. A deep magohany colour with a tight beige head; intense aroma of cinder toffee, honey and toast; slightly spritzy in the mouth, soft, and full of deeply roasted malts that sooth the throat; and with just enough bitterness to give a clean finish with a lingering mocha taste and a creamy finish. Exactly how a Porter should be in my opinion.

Bottle at Bodean’s Tower Hill. It pours very dark brown (near black) with a medium light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, cola, caramel, varnish and dark fruit. The taste is roasted malt, toast, varnish, caramel, nice bitterness, dark fruit and cola with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not complex, but smooth, well balanced and very drinkable.

(bottle from Mr Lawrence, SE London) Black in colour with a medium tan head, light lacing and medium body. Caramel and chocolate malt character and light fruits, and the lack of smokeyness/complexity actually leads itself to a very smooth easy drinking refreshing porter. Good stuff.

15 cl. draft @ Delirium Hoppy Loft. Black with a thick creamy mocha head. Smell is very heavy on black liquorice, damn way too much, underneath some sweet malts, dark bread, black bread, quite a bit of spices & some herbs. Taste is way too much black liquorice for me, like eating the stuff (I can see this coming from a Belgian brew but an American one?); thick sweet herbs, black bread, sweet spices, malty, touch molasses, lightly milky, touch hops, everything is dominated by black liquorice. Body is a bit sticky liquorice – yeah, I am not a fan of black liquorice candy.

Bottle. Pours black, with a small creamy, lightly coloured head. Aroma is roasted malts and coffee, as well as some liquorice. Full creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with lightly burned malts, caramel and coffee.

355ml bottle - thought I’d venture into some US bottles from Mitchell’s Wines, seeing as I’ve tried very few from there. A perfect black body, a tan top, excellent 5 out of 5 appearance. The nose is smoky, a sweet caramel, dried fruits. excellently pungent but delicate. A lovely oily mouthfeel, a little froth on the tongue, superb. The taste has a lovely rounded bite of malt and chocolate. Overall, magnificent.
