Hapkin is a strong blond top-fermented beer that is refermented in the bottle. The floral touch of Saazhop and the spicy hop variety Monroe determine this rich blond beer. Originally from Louwaege Brewery (Kortemark), brewed from 2001 to 2007 at Brasserie Union (Jumet), then at Alken-Maes (Alken).

The name refers to Count Baudouin VII of Flanders (1093-1119), nicknamed “Hapkin” or “with the ax”. 900 years ago he is said to have commissioned the monks of Ten Duinen Abbey (near Koksijde) to brew a strong blond beer that would make him and his men invincible.

The "blonde bier" from the Houtland, taken over from Louwaege by Alken-Maes in 2001. Tasted in both the original Louwaege version as the later Alken-Maes version; the first was a bit dryer and had a more elegant and refined, herbally aromatic hoppiness to it. The current version is still a decent beer though, with big frothy head and orange blonde colour; fruity aroma, soapy, peaches, sweet apples, grass, faint hints of lavender and grapefruit; rounded palate with fruity sweetish taste in onset, smooth with relatively strong carbonation though not as strong as in Duvel, against which it is clearly positioned commercially, warming alcohol and flowery hops in the finish.

Bottle from the beer palais on the Route de Poperinge border. Pours typical blonde, wheat, malts, floral, medium body. Not an outstanding blonde with too much of a strong flavour, kinda average, but ok nonetheless.
