The gnomes of Fairyland are particularly fond of this golden beer. LA CHOUFFE, with its slight hoppy taste, combining notes of fresh coriander and fruity tones, is the drink which gives them their zest for life. At least, that's what these imps say when they are thirsty. Their secret used to be jealously guarded from one generation to the next until the day they shared the recipe with humans to seal their friendship. Of all the legends from the wonderful region of the Belgian Ardennes, the tale of LA CHOUFFE is the one which most merits re-telling.

Golden ales have been on the lower end of the scale as to Belgian beers in my estimation. But that doesn’t mean I do not want to try. The squatty 33 cl bottle was obtained at a Total Wine in Vegas during March Madness. Brought home, cooled off and now tilted into my ABGB tulip glass there appears a vibrant gold-yellow liquid completed by a frothy snow white head. I lift for the scent. Quite decent, yellow fruit, yeast and a light spiciness. A taste now, hmm, I take it all back. Very nice, there is apricot, grain, a yellow raisin sweetness, coriander. All topped off by a fine little bitterness. Unsure why La Chouffe is lumped in with Belgian strong ales, strikes me as a trippel. Whatever. I will certainly buy again if I can ever find it.

Subtle, pleasant and will keep you warm even on cold, foggy days in Brussels. One of my all time favourites.

Eingetrübte, gelbe Farbe mit weißer Schaumkrone. Fruchtiger, hefiger, malziger Geruch.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours hazy blonde with medium white foam, fine. Aroma is quite fruity, mostly banana. Body is moderately dense with intense carbonation. Taste is generally sweet, with limited bitterness. Finish is relatively long and sweet.

Barwa ciemnozłota, niemal klarowne, piana biała, umiarkowanej wielkości, średnio trwała. W aromacie chmiel, ziołowość, nieco słodowości, estrów. W smaku półwytrawne, nieco słodowej podbudowy w stylu chlebowo-ciasteczkowym, do tego estry, nuty przyprawowe delikatne, owoce, ziołowość i trawiastość. Goryczka średnia do wysokiej minimalnie, wysycenie i ciało w normie, dobra pijalność, alkohol dobrze ukryty. Dobrze nachmielony Belg, zdradziecko pijalny, czyli prawidłowo.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, orangey golden colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Sweet-ish fruity, hoppy and malty aroma with a wheaty touch, minimally phenolic notes of yellow stone fruit, mirabelle, apricot, peach, all mingled with a spicy touch of coriander. Taste is sligthly sweet malty, fruity, with hoppy counterweight and minimally warming alcoholic touch, minimally biscuity and bready malty basic layer, notes of yellow stone fruit and pear above, spicy overtones with a touch of coriander; almost creamy texture, smooth and soft palate, gentle carbonation.
