The gnomes of Fairyland are particularly fond of this golden beer. LA CHOUFFE, with its slight hoppy taste, combining notes of fresh coriander and fruity tones, is the drink which gives them their zest for life. At least, that's what these imps say when they are thirsty. Their secret used to be jealously guarded from one generation to the next until the day they shared the recipe with humans to seal their friendship. Of all the legends from the wonderful region of the Belgian Ardennes, the tale of LA CHOUFFE is the one which most merits re-telling.

Man. I thought I tasted this years ago! Whatever, I just hope my rating was not accidently 'lost'. It pours cloudy and pale with a big foamy head that goes craggy and then fades to a small island, heheeh. Taste is initially laid back, and it has a little bit of a course alky character, but nothing like the 8% would indicate. For this ABV, its rather well behaved, makes me wonder if it really is eight. Yeasty nose, you can tell its got a fine heritage. Yes, goes down very easy for what it is, this is the quality of a real beldgy beer. So many domestics try to duplicate these belgium trippels, but just can't get there. There, you have it, JMHO.

0.75l bottle. Clear golden body with a lasting, dense white head. Aroma of bready malts, tangerine, coriander. It definitely has witbier-like characteristics. Traces of honey also show up. Taste of honey, bready malts, orange zest, coriander and some floral hops. Medium bodied with an average carbonation. Tge alcohol is a bit warming. Decent beer.

Pours light amber with a bit of haziness. A couple of fingers of white, large-bubbled head. Most of the head recedes quite quickly, but a layer remains through the end. Average intensity in the aroma. A sweet base of caramel and honeish malts, with light fruity notes (orange, peach) and quite vivid spiciness. Taste notes are quite different from what the aroma suggested. There's a sweet sirupy feel upfront that kinda feels artificial. Aroma notes are still there, but kind of undefined/unclean. A quite strong earthy note shows up in both finish and afteraste to balance sweetness, but, again, the result is a muddy, half sticky-sweet half bitter finish. Medium to dense bodied with medium to high carbonation, possibly a tad lower than style average in carbonation. The overall experience was still acceptable.
