Ideal for the Lager drinker who prefers amber beers, the "Scratch" is a smooth, malt-accentuated lager. Brewed in the "Steam-Style" tradition, scratch is a so-called hybrid beer that is fermented at medium temperatures to develop some ale and lager characteristics.

(Bottle on 2008-09-22) Amber. Clear. Very small and quickly disappearing head. Sweet and malty nose. Medium bodied dryish palate with lot of carbonation. Malts, bitterness, sweetness, some salty liquorice, citric flavours and fruitiness in taste.

Bottled(355ml). -Reddish pale amber coloured, small off-white head that went away fast leaving nice lace, sweet malty caramel nose. The taste is very similar, also sweet malty, caramel and light hoppy with notes of nuts and wood. Dry finish with touch of grapes. 5.3%.

Bottle: Poured a reddish with a off white head. Aroma is malty with a nice hop hint. Taste is sweet with malts but has that harsh bitter hop bite as well. Interesting to say the least.

Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Lager is copper-brown beer with thin blond head. Malts, toffee and hint of flowery hops are found from the aroma. Flavour is surprisingly quite dry with nice bitterness and there are found malts and some pine needles. Quite easy and slippery to drink with balanced carbonation. I was waiting quite much from this beer and it doesnβt fullfilled for my all expectations; balanced but still slightly boring and common beer.

Bottle from a sampler from Harris Teeter Barracks Charlottesville. Pours a dark orange with minimal head. Nondescript malty aroma. Grainy, gummy bear malty taste. I find this odd.

Bottle. A clear, dark golden to amber body with an off-white head. The aroma has a pleasant hoppy touch, filling in with the caramel maltyness, but itβs rather boring. Malty, caramel, slightly roasted flavor with a low level of bitterness. Medium body. Caramel, roasted malt and some hops and bitterness in the finish. Easy to drink, but lacks a bit. (080314)
