Keukenbrouwers have pleasantly surprised me once - and I had many of their beers - namely with a double IPA presented at Modeste Bierfestival several years ago, so I was hoping this one reiterates that success. Hopped with generous amounts of El Dorado - sounds promising. Bottled Hip Hops are very often gushers, so I opened this one over the sink and indeed, foam came out, but not in such a way that I lost half the bottle, luckily. When pouring, a towering high, inches thick, coarse, off-white head is formed, quickly collapsing into an ugly mishmash of lacing rags and loose, irregularly shaped, large-bubbled 'islands', but with a second pour, the foam more or less stabilized, if remaining very irregular and large-bubbled; misty orange blonde robe - impossible to pour in a 'clear' way, with specks of darker yeast bits here and there, 'uglified' by a khaki tinge just beneath the shabby head. My hopes were all but shattered, until I took a sniff and a sip: the El Dorado burst out of the glass and straight into the nose, almost taking away my breath in combination with the escaping gas - but fully unfolded its splendid peacock tail of freshly squeezed orange juice, pomelo flesh, mango and pink grapefruit, before going into descent and mixing with an overload of yeasty aspects, resulting in a mix of rotting banana, cooked carrot, old sweetbread, cloves, overripe peaches, wet powder sugar, tomato concentrate, homemade gooseberry jam, sweet red curry and, there it was, a hint of onsetting, 'rusty' oxidation. Crisp, estery onset, banana ester mixed with freshly cut Pink Lady apple, peach and sweet cherry tomato notes, initially heavily carbonated, with a heavy load of minerally effects; mouthfeel is coarsened by this overcarbonation, but it does settle down after a while. Bready and Munich malt-caramelly, slick malt sweet body with a thick trail of ongoing overripe fruit esters on top, increasingly bittered by a firm, sharp, peppery, rooty, leafy hoppiness, lingering on the root of the tongue for a long time with - admittedly - pleasantly drying effect, yet competing with overt bready earthiness and breadiness, a heavy dosage of near-medicinal phenols and the unbeatable Belgian esters. Some malt sweetness is retained under all this; the hops do get the last word, but in an impure, marred kind of way. Granted, this bottle had been standing on a shelf for too long a period in a shop and the oxidation clearly indicates that for this kind of beer, I consumed it way too old; still, this strong effect of Belgian yeast esters and phenols does reveal that no, this is not at the same quality level of the only truly successful beer I had from this brewery so far, the aforementioned DIPA. There is, however, no doubt in my mind that when consumed fresh and from tap, this is probably infinitely better (also considering other ratings here - and considering the laws of IPA in general), so I am prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt, but then I never saw this on tap anywhere so I have no means to compare and can only judge this beer by the bottle in front of me. It does, clearly, reconfirm my standard opinion on this brewery: their beers can be more than decent when young and tapped, but avoid their bottles. Shame.
