La birra trappista viene prodotta dai monaci dell’Abbazia delle Tre Fontane a Roma. È una birra ad alta fermentazione prodotta con una ricetta esclusiva che si avvale della sapienza secolare dei monaci, ma rinvenuta fortunosamente in tempi recenti. È una birra color oro intenso dal sapore incisivo e fruttato con l’eucaliptus – piantato dai monaci per bonificare la zona circostante l’abbazia – che stringe le note fruttate portandole a sé.Per affinare la qualità della birra sono trascorsi alcuni anni, ma nel 2015 le è stato finalmente attribuito il marchio ATP (Authentic Trappist Product), l’undicesimo assegnato nel mondo.

A Trappist out of Italy? I have to get out more often. Eucalyptus? I have to get out more often. I’m pouring into my Teku glass, well, I used it for the previous beer, that’s why. Nice pour, dark body and a decent, mostly white head. I take a smell, hmm, definitely detecting some added ingredient. A taste, big improvement over the scent. I get apricot, banana, some yeastiness and a dollop of minty spice which must be the eucalyptus. Better than anticipated, that’s why you drink em.

Bruin bier met schuim. Smaak is licht zoetzuur kruidig met iets van honing en een vleugje karamel. Vaag is de eucalyptus en iets van menthol in de kruidige smaak te herkennen. Mooie aanwinst.

Bottle pour at Osteria Morini in Washington, DC. Poured a hazy orange color with a medium-small white head. Aroma was, kind of weird Fernet action going on here. Some mint notes, herbal. Wheat, grain. Some alcohol is present here. Flavor was pleasant grain, wheat, coriander, kind of funky.

Flesje gedeeld met H en B. Oranje bruin bier, matig schuimend tijdens inschenken maar het schuim zakt vrij vlot weer weg. Vreemd kruidig aroma met iets van munt. De smaak is eveneens kruidig en licht bitter. De nasmaak is wat wrang.

33cl Bottle at some over-priced tourist trap near Forum Romanum. Murky golden colour, white head. Aroma of sweet malts, honey, cooked apple, eucalyptus, some lemon, yeast. Flavour is sweet, malty, cooked apple, eucalyptus, lemon, some alcohol, bitter finish. Medium to full bodied. Tasty.

Bottle: Cloudy, dark yellow with a white head. Orange, grain, floral scent. Taste is sweet fruit, grain malt, candy sugar. A mild, eucalyptus-like cooling.... Tasty.

Bouteille 33 cl trouvée chez Les Chopes à Lille. Robe ambrée orangée et mousse abondante. Nez sur l'eucalyptus, menthe. En bouche, on retrouve l'eucalyptus, de la coriandre, de la menthe, tout ceci donne un côté frais peu commun pour une triple. Son originalité mérite d'être notée et sans être ma trappiste favorite, elle se laisse tout à fait boire.
