As the first new beer to be brewed in Windsor for nearly 80 years GUARDSMAN is how we think every Best Bitter should taste. Guardsman is a lovely copper-coloured session strength ale with a tangy taste and a really fresh hop finish. It is brewed with premium Maris Otter pale malt and a blend of Pilgrim, Styrian Golding and Fuggles hops.

Cask @ Bree Louise, Euston NW1. Pours a clear pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty weak hoppy aroma. Fruity malty hoppy flavor with hints of caramel. Has a fruity malty hoppy finish.

Cask at Dean Swift. It pours hazy amber, with a thin off-white head. The nose is nut, caramel, wood and toffee. The taste is wood, nut, leather, leaf, dust, light smoke and caramel, with a decent dry-bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Not bad, just unexciting.

(Cask at Bree Louise, Euston, London, 19 July 2011) Amber colour with creamy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with apricots and orange. Fruity, malty taste with notes of orange, apricots, hints of caramel and a generous citrussy bitterness. Slightly below medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and tasty. Highly drinkable and very nice bitter.

Cask at Bishops Stortford Beer Festival 2010. An amber beer with a bubbly white head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel, leading to a bitter and hoppy finish.

Cask at the Greenwich Wetherspoons. Pours hazy amber with a creamy off-white head. Fruity aroma. Flavors of light roast caramel, citric fruit and a little wood. Moderately bitter finish. With time wood becomes oak. Sort of.

Small offwhite head. Brilliant amber body with carbonation. Earthy caramelly toffee aroma with cinnamon notes. Dry-sweetish earthy caramelly toffee taste with spicy salty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dry earthy cinnamon aftertaste lingers. Traces of sandalwood, too. A bit lacking in complexity and freshness, but far from bad. (0.5l bottle, beermerchants.com.)
