ABV: 8.5% IBU: 80 Ticks: 136

500mL bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a total black with a thick tan head - looks more like a robust porter or stout. Aroma of intensely rich roasted malts, burnt espresso and harsh citrus hops - beautiful on the nose. Flavour is more roasty than anything, with rich roasted malt, dark roasted espresso, some subtle tangy fruits, molasses, then the hops blast through on the finish, leaving a roasty / hoppy finish with high astringency. Palate is more like a thick porter or stout with a ton of hops. A bit harsh, but that's what I expect from an Imperial Black IPA - delicious.

0,5 l. bottle, 2009 "vintage", batch # 407. Black colour with a beige head. Bittersweet aroma of licorice, roasted malts and hops. Medium sweet taste with tons of licorice. Hops are definitely there, but somewhat subdued. Medium to full body, smooth, oliy texture with a soft carbonation. The porter/stout style dominates more than the IPA style - maybe due to the age of this bottle. I´d like to try a fresh one. This is still a big beer.

A bottle of batch 509 @ benzai. Opage black with a nice brown head. Smells hoppy (citrus) and chocolate. Tastes hoppy, chocolate and roasty. Very round flavour, full body and great carbo. Great beer! Not the best of the best but definately enjoyable.

08/05 0.5 l bottle courtesy of ogivlado, great thanks for sharing, and giving away the bottle to decorate my room! Well it poured pitch black body with medium sized brown head. Dark malt dominated aroma, caramel and coffee mostly with herbal and orange hops. Slightly acidic scent. Similar flavor, coffee, chocolate, caramel, licorice, touch of alcohol, herbal hop bitterness, somewhat peppery. Creamy texture, full bodied, with long sweetish finish which surprisingly didn’t show hops unlike the flavor. A good black IPA, liked it.

Bottle @ home. Deep black appearance with a dark brown head. Rich chocolate malty, mild to moderately piney hoppy nose. Dark, thick chocolate malty, bitter, piney hoppy flavor. Very tasty chocolate flavor with a fairly big hoppy taste.

Bottle at De Klomp. Appearance: Dark brown/black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma isn’t that hoppy and more malty, has notes of molasses, burnt, smokey, piney, perfume, and leather. Taste: dark chocolate, espresso. Medium bitterness and little sweetness. Heavily bodied with long lingering finish. I quite liked it, but this bottle was almost 2½ years old, which isn’t exactly optimal for a BIPA... 7/4/7/4/16 => 3.8 Re-rating 2012-01-09. Draught. Clear black liquid with medium light tan head. Aroma of citrus, tangerine, light ash, licorice, coffee and pine. Taste is dry and medium bitter with notes of light ash, coffee, licorice and some citrus. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Totally a different beer than the one I tried earlier. Up the overall by 1 and the aroma as well.

12/9/9/10/11/10

22oz bottle from Supermarket liquors in Fort Collins
Appearance: Black with a medium sized creamy tan head and good lacing
Aroma: Roasted malts and cocoa
Taste: Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate with a bitter dry finish
A nice beer. Not much hop presence, more of an imperial stout.
