Amber Farmhouse ale
This deep amber hued ale takes it's inspiration from Germany while still nodding to the Belgian farmhouse tradition. The base is comprised of German two-row wheat, Cara-Munich, and roasted barley. Generously hopped with a blend of Perle, Spalt, and Hallertau Mittelfrüh, and fermented with a rustic Belgian farmhouse ale yeast. These elements together provide a melange of earth and fruit aromas backed with hints of caramel and a dry clean finish.

Medium beige head. Slightly hazy reddish amber body. Earthy caramelly funky aroma with buttery roasty herbal notes. Dry-sweet roasty caramelly earthy taste with funky mealy nutty notes. Mid-bodied. Soft, rounded, mealy mouthfeel. Dry mealy earthy caramel aftertaste with fruity funky dusty notes. (0.75l bottle, Håndverkerstuene, Oslo.)

Kinda mixed on this one. Garnet brown, clear. Sudsy khaki head. Fruit and candy nose, a little toffee. Orange and chocolate flavors, carbonic bite with a burst of spicy hops at the finish, almost too much bitterness, lingering stinging carbonation, mild astringency, mild chemical note.

750 ml bottle at Beer Kitchen in Kansas City, Missouri. Pour is a haze brown ruby black with a small off white head. Aroma is rye malt, grass, bright mulling cranberry spice, and the house Stillwater yeast. Taste is the malt, crackery with a grassy malt note, along with a pleasant mild char, followed by the yeast. Finishes with some of the berry sweetness. Palate is medium bodied, nice soft natural carbonation. Interesting beer, well executed.

750 mL bottle. Pours dark, orangish brown. Aroma is strong and pleasant. The malts give notes of caramel, hay, and a little dark fruits. The hops contribute a little grass and some earth. The belgian yeasts give a lot of fruity esters and a little spiciness. The flavor is very well balanced sweet and bitter, with a touch of tartness in the end. The palate is medium to heavy, lively and kinda chewy. Overall, this is a delicious and complex beer, with varied and well balanced flavors and a clean and easy-drinking mouthfeel.

MF: good carbon, full body, thick creamy texture. Taste: mocha start, fruity touches, sour red fruits, citrus, bit of herbs. Aftertaste: hops, citrus touches.

Whole Foods, P St, DC 750ml ($12): Pours a brown color with an off-white head. Aroma is sugar, Belgian yeast, wheat, and some fruitiness. In a way this beer smells like what brewing beer smells like. Taste is pretty unique. I can see what they mean by the German factors. The hoppiness is very subdued. It comes out a little in the aftertaaste. The focus, while the beer is still in your mouth, is more on the malt and yeast factors, which work together pretty well. There is also some mild roastiness at the finish, but that’s really about it. Body is quite light. There really isn’t another beer that I have had that tastes quite like this.

Draught@Craft Beer Co, London (As Stillwater Autumn Saison). Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is caramel malts, some sweetish sour berries, earth, mild hebral hops and earth. Flavour is being quite much the same. Floral and quite sweetish aftertaste.

At ACBF 2011. Brown/russet colour, hazy, thin beige head. Reminds me of a french biere de garde on aroma. Some belgian yeast. Bit sweet. Not keen on this.

Pours a fizzy dark brown - nose is tart, bordering on sour, with a fair amount of banana, some Munich malt richness - tastes sort of like a mildly Belgian dunkelweiss - mild acidity and tartness on th approach - sweetens up through the middle, bringing notes of hazelnut and brown sugar - moderate banana and clove phenols - finishes a little roasty and leafy, with some notes of tobacco - a bit over carbonated - decent, but I was expecting more.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of notalush. Big thanks Brandon! Dark red brown appearance with a tan head. Sweet caramelized, dark Belgian, light toffee nose. Slightly roasty, caramel malty, dark belgian, lightly tart flavor. Dark, banana like, belgian finish.
