This beer is the result of a lively discussion between the Hofstetten Brewery and Matthias Neidhart from B. United International on beers and beer styles.

In 1810, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony celebrated their marriage in Munich.

Back then and today, beer has played a pivotal role in Munich’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, which takes place each September to commemorate the event.

We are all familiar with the images of golden beer in big liter glasses that have come to be associated with Oktoberfest, but how did the beer in 1810 really taste?

Due to the Munich’s extremely hard water, we are confident that the only beer being brewed at that time in the area was dark. Filtering would not have been common practice, and the beer would have been stronger in alcohol and well-hopped to ensure an adequate shelf life.

We were therefore sure to include all these elements in our Original Hochzeitsbier (Wedding Beer) from 1810 as well.

A malt bill of 100% Munich malt provides the darker color but also a certain amount of residual sugar, giving this beer a nice smooth body. Warm fruity notes from the hops then balance out this truly historical beer.

500ml bottle. Murky grayish orange-brown. Thin, small, patchy head. Doughy yeast esters, maybe a hint of oxidation. Tastes a little faded, amber malt tones,,but I suppose is it in the Oktoberfest style...whatever, this one is clearly past it’s prime, sort of a bummer. Probably one to avoid unless you know it’s fresh. Woody and awkward amber malt tones.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a dark cream colored head. Light malt aroma. Malt and light caramel flavor with citrus, light breadiness, and mineral notes. Medium bodied. Easy drinking. Light caramel and mineral lingers with citrus.

Location: Draft at RnH, 10/23/11 Aroma: Aroma has some tea, a liitle spice, bread, herbs, and yeast Appearance: The pour is a cloudy orange color, with no head or lace present Flavor: The flavor is lightly sweet, with a decent spice component, and mild bitterness Palate: The body is light-medium, with a decent mouthfeel, and an average carbonation Overall Impression: This is a very solid offering. It is pretty interesting as well. I like the way it drinks. I’d drink this one again. UPDATED: Draft at Maloney's, 10/10/24. Clear caramel orange color, beige head. Heavy caramel and bready malt on the aroma and flavor. A little dry on the finish. Quite good. 8/4/8/4/16

500ml bottle. Poured a clear orange/amber color with a medium sized foamy white head. Aroma was light caramel malts, touch of bready malts. Munich malts, caramel, light and crisp, but otherwise relatively standard German fare.

On tap. Poured a clear golden amber with an off-white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was malty with sweet grain and bread coming through but there was a nice light fruit note to bring complexity. Flavor was similar with grain and bread throughout complimented by light fruit and a hint of a perfume note in the finish.

Chevy Chase Wine and Liquors, DC 500ml ($6): Pours a copper color with a very nice frothy beige head. Aroma is of marzen-like malts, bread, and German hops. Taste is a little metallic. Solidly malty, but with good hop notes in there as well. A little sweet as well. Very good mouth feel and goes down the hatch really easy. A well-balanced beer that was pleasant to drink.

Caramel, and malt nose. Clear copper, thick head. Malt flavor initially but rather suddenly transforms into a blend of cherries and tinny honey. Too metallic, but otherwise it’s a good lager.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very hazy and murky amber color, looking quite anemic. A thin tan head fades to a thin spotted pattern on the surface of the beer looking very much like a mold culture. Not a good start. Caramel aroma with earthy and spicy notes. The taste is caramel, earthy notes, gummy fruit notes, peppery spice notes. A little bit all akilter. Weird and slightly offensive. Medium-full bodied. I did not enjoy this one, and especially disliked it at the price. Meh.
