Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

330 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Mahogany coloured beer, large and lasting tan head. Malty sweet aroma, notes of port wine, oak and bakery. Excellent mouthfeel, full and rich. Flavour of generous malts, caramel, dried dark fruits, moderate but noticeable hops (Goldings and Northdown), port wine finish. Fairly sweet, but not cloying. A true classic!

Bottle from Sainsbury's. Pours pitch black with a large thick creamy beige head. Aromas of roasted malts, caramel, liquorice, dried dark fruits, brown sugar and molasses. Taste has more of the same notes with a little added spice. Full body, low carbonation with a smooth mouthfeel and a fruity, caramel and sweetish finish. Nicely balanced. Very nice winter drink. Enjoyed. Revisited 13/10/23. The same as before but getting added toffee and fudge notes both in the aroma and the taste.

Frothy off white head stayed on a Coca-Cola coloured still body. Malt & caramel aroma. Medium to full bodied, soft with a tingle on the back. Malt, caramel, raisin, light pepper, liquorice & spicy tastes. Excellent but better on cask!

Smooth deep caramel beginning. Plums, dark caramel with intense sticky rich dried fruits - dates, plums, red cherries and christmas-pudding-dough. Extremely complex and viscous, quite dry, caramelly and extreme deep. Fantastic.
