Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

0.33L bottle, stable thick brown head, quite clear deep brown colour, aroma of lightly roasted coffee and cola, aroma of bread with touches of vanila pod and dried fruits, strong woody bitterness, a touch coarse, sour and touch bitter aftertaste. A bit dissapinting.

330ml bottle. Pours really dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is caramel malt, plums and some alcohol. Taste is malt and dried fruit. Was expecting a bit more to be honest. However, it is really full bodied. Hides its alcohol, although there is some burn on the finish. Low carbonation.

Re-rate 4/16: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Lior D. Around 3 years old. Malt, caramel, some nuts, cardboard, some dark fruits. Very sweet. Too old. Score is not calculated. 5/3/5/3/10=2.6

Bottle. Deep brown color with a big beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, some dark fruits (prunes, raisins), a bit of chocolate, sherry and alcohol notes. Sweet malty flavor with some fruitiness and a nice roasty, slightly hoppy drier finish with a bit of alcohol in the back. Medium-full body. Lacks a bit of depth and body but still pretty tasty and easy-drinking. 6/4/7/3/14=3.4

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Sveavägen, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby. Frothy, beige head. Malty, slightly roasted nose with notes of dark fruit, raisins, caramel and dark bread. Malty, toasty taste with dried fruit, raisins, prunes, chocolate, caramel and dark rye bread. Full body, fairly sweet with a vinous bittersweet finish. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.

0.33 l bottle from beershop.hr, shared with Doggythedog. It poured brown body with medium to bigger cascade head. Aroma is nice, roasty malts with pleasant dark malt like chocolate, a bit chalky as well. Malty coffee flavor, as well reflects to chocolate, licorice and burned wood. Generally sourish, with fuller body had some acidic finish which also might be from the hops. Nice beer, I really liked it!

Bottle from beershop.hr, shared with heavy. Poured a deep ruby that ends up being almost dark brown. Small tan head. Carboardy nose, chocolate, raisins, papery maltiness, alcohol too. The taste is slightly less complex. Coffeish taste, woody even, ending acidic. Papery, creamy, slightly roasty Full, malty, not too strong and drinkable. Like a slightly higher octane regular brown ale or a lighter porter. Slightly bitter near the end. Slightly hoppy aftertaste. Nice but nothing too special.
