Big Dick’s is a classic English-style Olde Ale. Sweet and full-bodied malt flavors are complemented by a fragrant but mild hop bitterness. Sweet, bready malt aromas combine with rich flavors of dark fruit, brown sugar, caramel and sweet nuts. Truly a beer for the ages, Big Dick’s Olde Ale matures gracefully in the cellar as fruity, estery flavors and mineral notes emerge while the hop bitterness gradually subsides. Delightful on its own or as a digestif with a hand-rolled cigar, Big Dick’s is a delicious pairing for hearty food and cigars alike.

Bottle: Leathery brown pour with a modest beige head. Nose is sweet with maltiness and vinous fruits. Some hints at sours and tannins. Tastes malty for the most part, before a little bit of dry florals and some chocolate malt. Light bitters and the presence of the alcohol (decently subdued). Vinous fruits and lightly woody. Hearty. As it warms, the yeast becomes more prominent. Some spiciness almost give it a Belgian feel.

Bomber from Oak Tree. Vintage 2006. Super cool!! Pours hazy ruddy amber/copper with a 4 finger foamy beige/tan head. Aroma of lots of roasted malt with hints of resiny (?) hop. Medium plus body with creamy/foamy carbonation. Flavor is lots of roast malt with herby/grassy hop. Resin? Citrus? Hmm. It’s very well balanced. No particular sign of heat. Develops a chocolate touch, but that’s very light. Gets complex as it warms. Age has not been bad for this guy. Really nice.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Franklin's, 3/26/10
Vintage 2009

Aroma: Lots of earthy notes and some caramel malts, toffee, booze, and a drop of tart fruit
Appearance: Pours a dark orage/brown color with a decent amount of lace from an off-white head
Flavor: Flavor is rather malty, light-medium sweet, earthy, mild bitterness
Palate: This one is fairly creamy and smooth, minimal heat
Overall Impression: Drinking this one on my last night living in MD. This beer is solid. Nothing overly special, but more then drinkable. Good Stuff. Next rating I'll be a NJ resident...

Draught at Sunset Grill, January 2009. Dark amber, with some copper highlights and a medium beige head. Not much to the aroma, musty yeast-like notes, with some old raisin and toffee that has an almost prune-like element to it. Flavor tastes, well, rather old. Some light oxidation of the malts, which are fairly lean and a pervading element of dustiness/mustiness hangs throughout the flavor. Dryish, somewhat thinned-out maltiness and a bit of cardboard-like blandness on the finish. Some sweet vanilla and caramel maltiness up front is all that saves this from being a drainpour. Alcohol is not noticed. Bittersweet, toasty/acidic malts finish it off.

500ml bomber bottle. Attractive thick brown-amber color. Its hard for me to imagine what the definitive Old Ale is so I always find the style to perplex. This one doesn’t scream Old Ale to me, mainly due to the hefty hoppage. Nitpicking aside, this is a great beer. Full malty body with a creamy almost bock-like quality to it. The hops really help to balance it out while retaining some of those deep malt characteristics. Memorable.
