12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown, with a small, beige, creamy head. Just a little lacing. Aromas of toffee, butterscotch, walnuts, and some light bready yeasty notes. Sweet and bready, with some light hoppy bitterness. Medium body, with a lovely velvety, effervescent, and smooth feel. This is a sweet, flavorful, and wonderfully (albeit very lightly) hopped.

Bottle. Light roasty malt aroma. Clear chestnut with a moderate tan head. Light earthy roasty malt flavor. Light body, moderate carbonation.

Bottle, courtesy of a sweet trade bonus from GT2, pours with a clear amber to deep ruby red body that support a thin light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up caramel malts, some roasted malts, earthy tobacco notes and a mineral water sensation nuanced by faint sweet dark fruity esters. The taste begins with a mix of roasted malts, tobacco earthiness and caramel malts. It picks up vague hop bitterness and a mineral note into the finish. Pretty nice. I love the earthy tobacco note that helps create more depth and interest.

After having the Beckβs Sapphire, which I thought was a dark lager (and sucked badly), I decided to try this one which is more of the style I expected from the other (and I am not a big fan of the original Newcastle). Part of a mix sixer at Albertsons in Vegas. Pours a clean dark copper colour, looking like cola, but the head is quite nice with some beige froth, good retention and lots of spotty soap lacing. Kind of a different aroma to this one, with some strong hoppy adjuncts, giving out licorice notes with caramel in the back. Flavours of roasted malts with Perrier water and hints of butterscotch. Kind of a weird black lager overall and still not a fan of this brand. Better than the Sapphire though.

Bottle. Black with off white head. See why itβs called a black ale. Malty aroma with a slight unfortunate hot tar bit. Flavour is malty with some chocolate. Reminds me of a December day in South Africa.

Bottle from Candia Rd Pours a deep clear reddish brown with a creamy off white head that persists forever. Aromas of caramel and chocolate with a bit of pitted fruit, sulfur, butter, and mineral water. The flavor is caramel, toffee, butter, and a hint of chocolate. Light sulfur, and tobacco in there as well. Medium body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet bubbly mouthfeel. Not a bad brew, a bit high on the diacetyl meter for me, but I could drink another if I had to.

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a decent roasted chocolate malt with some roasted nuts. Flavor is weaker but you still get a decent roasted malt with some bitterness but it overall pretty watery. Most of these Newcastle beers are kinda meh but this was at least heading in the right direction with a nice roasted malt.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark ruddy copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma of malt, light stone fruit, perhaps grass. Med body. Flavor is chocolate, moving on to light fruits with something like Earl Grey grass. Hay. Somewhat uncommon flavor here. Drinks nicely. Keep thinking Earl Grey. Itβs fairly dry, and towards astringent.
