On tap at Free State. Pours black with a chocolate milk head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has notes of dark grains and a bit of roast backed by butter popcorn. Flavor has notes of roast with deep dark grains but has a backing note of popcorn.

Sample at Flying Saucer in KC. The beer is a dark brown color with a thin and creamy light beige head that recedes to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, mild coffee and hops. Flavors of mildly bitter coffee, chocolate malt and subtle hops. The finish is slightly thin and roasty with a short coffee aftertaste. Decent overall.

Hey they made an Oatmeal Stout and forgot the oatmeal. Pint pour @ brewpub served way too freaking cold. A completely black body with an off-white head. Aroma is thick grassy herb matliness. Taste is a bit astringent mineral and root plant. Not sweetness at all, no oatmeal, very basic and uninteresting.6/3/6/3/13
Re-rate: Much better this time. Aroma is lightly sweet and slick tobacco with light burnt roast. Taste is lightly ashy with a bitter hop finish. Much better, basically a different beer than the first time. I will change the rating to this. 7/4/7/3/15

RE-RATE. Pint from a growler purchased same day as consumed. This was much fuller and more expressive than I originally thought. Nice full tan head, great settling. Aroma of soft roast, sweet caramel malt and a nice tobacco. Taste was also much better, the roast is coffee and smoke, with nice bright pine hop to the finish. Palate nice and full without being heavy. Really completely different and better than I had remembered. (7,4,8,4,15 - 3.8)
I originally had this on draft at Draft at Barleys in OP, KS Nov 5, 2006. Deep brown, though could see through a bit. By the time it got to the table, no head whatsoever. For an oatmeal stout, I was expecting a lit more body. I actually thought this one was thin, lacking a bit of taste. I would love to try this one closer to the source. (6,2,6,3,16 - 3.3)

Very dark brown, with a small dense creamy head. Clean, lightly roasty, coffeeish aroma. Rich malty profile. Lightly fruity with dates, smooth with a solid hoppy finish. Mild, lingering roastiness.
