Some may remember Daybreak, an imperial stout brewed with organic citrus zest. Originally brewed in 2011, at a time when we coined the phrase ICU (international citrus unit), this rebrewed version of our original collaborative adventure resulted from the creative friendship between two transatlantic travelers. Denmark and our Danish friends have long been a continual source of inspiration; thus we are honored to re-release Daybreak as a collaboration with our friend, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller.

On tap at CBC 2012. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Smokey-malty aroma. Strarts strong-malty, scratchy-woody, hints of liquorice. Finish softer malty, modest spicy. Some mild sourish hints. Quite drinkable for a beer of this strength.

500 ml bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours pitch black with a big creamy dark mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thin lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet, malty and fruity with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, moist soil, orange zest, salty liquorice, dark chocolate, charred wood and lemon zest. Taste is bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, salty liquorice, dark roast coffee, burnt wood, bitter chocolate, grapefruit rinds, lemon zest and orange zest. Mouthfeel is creamy, soft, round, astringent and near full bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, moist soil, charred wood and citrus peal.

Bottle @ Mikkeller & Friends. Dark color, medium brown head. Aroma of coffee and chocolat with a fruity blanket of citrus and orange on top. Big maltiness in taste where bitter and sweet are in perfect harmony, again with fruity tones from the oranges. Lovely balance, awesome beer.

Dark brown to black colour, tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, caramel, mocha with milk. Quite bitter flavour, light sweet, hops, roasted malts, milk chocolate and coffee. Medium full, finish bitter chocolate, caramel and cocoa.
A nice, well made stout. Not really picking up on the citrus though.

Thanks to Travlr for sharing this one. 50 cl. bottle sampled. Exited to actually try Hill Farmstead & it’s a “collab” with Mikkelller. + it’s an RIS with citrus, would love to see more stouts with fruits. Pours standard black with a mocha head. Sweet mocha, creamy nose, light bitterness, light touch of roast, touch hop, vanilla, milk chocolate. Taste is milk chocolate, light herbs, moderate bitter roast, milky, touch sweet creamy, fruity but not specifically picking up citrus, maybe a light touch of peel if I wanted to, would have like more but this is pretty good as it is now, light dark fruits, vanilla, light hop, light caramel. On the medium side body-wise for a stout but easy to drink. Hard to form a definite opinion of a brewery from just one beer & hype is just that, hype aka nonsense. This was a very lovely beer.

66cl bottle sample @ RBBWG 2013, courtesy of Travlr.

19/I/13 - 50cl (?) bottle @ RBBWG 2013 - BB: n/a (2013-51) Thanks to Travlr for sharing the bottle and to 77ships to bring me half of his glass while I was working my ass of in the kitchen to get these ungrateful bitches some food! ;-)

Little cloudy brown beer, small head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: caramel, cocoa powder, sweet, vanilla, bit sugary, mocha. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: bit sour, mocha, bitter, dark chocolate, bitter and hoppy, caramel. Aftertaste: hops, vanilla, caramel, bit sugary, sweet, mocha, coffee, dark chocolate. Very decent stout! Would not have guessed it's a 10% ABV though!

Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2013. Opaque pitch black color, small to medium sized brown head. Smell malts, hops, coffee, lovely roastyness. Taste malts, superb roastyness, lightly hops, a touch of coffee, some alcohol. Velvety silky texture, full body, suitable carbonation.
