Imperial Stout brewed with Citrus at Hill Farmstead Brewery with the company, hard work, and input of our good friend Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller.

Some may remember Daybreak, an imperial stout brewed with organic citrus zest. Originally brewed in 2011, at a time when we coined the phrase ICU (international citrus unit), this rebrewed version of our original collaborative adventure resulted from the creative friendship between two transatlantic travelers. Denmark and our Danish friends have long been a continual source of inspiration; thus we are honored to re-release Daybreak as a collaboration with our friend, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller.

On tap at Mikkeller Bar, November 2012. Black with a medium, tan head. Not as heavy as expected, some notes of earth in this one. Also roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate. The finish was bitter.

Draft at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. First beer of Day 2. Pours thick black with a sturdy, dark brown foam head. Rich dark chocolate nose, hints of orange citrus. Rich flavor, medium to big sweetness without being syrupy, some burnt chocolate, light roasty earth and faint tobacco, fair roasty bitterness. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Quite dry and bitter on the finish, perhaps on account of some orange rind. Nice, lasting baking cocoa character. The beer doesn’t weight heavily on the tongue like so many impy stouts, which is an accomplishment. Well rounded beer.

Tap at CBC, May 2012. It pours jet black, with a decent tan head. The nose is fresh citrus, pith, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some toasted coconut. The taste is roasted malt, liquorice, strong citrus (orange and some lime), chocolate, caramel, toffee, strong coffee, charcoal, soap and some alcohol warmth, with a dry-roasted finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Interesting and flavoursome.
