Some may remember Daybreak, an imperial stout brewed with organic citrus zest. Originally brewed in 2011, at a time when we coined the phrase ICU (international citrus unit), this rebrewed version of our original collaborative adventure resulted from the creative friendship between two transatlantic travelers. Denmark and our Danish friends have long been a continual source of inspiration; thus we are honored to re-release Daybreak as a collaboration with our friend, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller.

Bottle via a trade. Pours with a huge, viscous black body with a deep brown head and some insane lace. Aromas are herbal, chocolate, ashy, light citrusy notes, big roast, coffee, medium hops, deeply malty, bready and rich. Flavors are medium citrus, nearly citra like, papaya, tropical fruit, medium chocolate, roast, coffee. Lightly grassy hoppy notes. Passionfruit. Medium bubbles, fuller bodied, rich, chocolaty and warming. Very well done.

50cl bottle pours an oily, opaque black with some clumpy, white head. Coffee aroma, nutty, brown sugar, dark chocolate, raisins. Flavor has expresso beans, raisins, ancho chile, dark chocolate, some orange peel, some burnt caramel, toast. Full bodied, oily but dry finish. Good coffee flavors.

Bottle shared with the Kernel crew. Dark brown beer, opaque. Little tan head. Light soft dry palate. Creamy dark malt, a little roast. Well integrated dark marmalade and citrus. Mild lacto. Really well joined up. Wasn’t sure that this would work but the dark malt and marmaladey citrus are good bedfellowes. Very tasty.

Bottle 500ml. @ [ Fastelavn Smagning - Carnival Tasting - Ulfborg ].[ Courtesy of yespr ]. Clear dark brown colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light brown head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, dark chocolate, strong coffee, dark dried fruit, alcohol. Flavour is light heavy sweet and bitter with a long long duration, chocolate, dark dark malts. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120218]

500mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany!), pours jet black with a medium tan head. Aroma of intense dark roasted malt above anything, with espresso, and dark chocolate, and slight hints of the citrus - but the intense roast dominates the nose. Flavour of intense roast, more roast and even more roast - some burnt espresso beans, maybe some chocolate cake, and some subtle citrus hints on the finish along with more roast (this sort of reminds me of G.D. Yeti). This is pretty much everything I love in an impy stout. Extremely full-bodied, rich and even harsh (in a good way). Absolutely beautiful concoction.

Bottle. Mild vinous aroma, hint of marmalade. Black colour. Dark brown colour. The flavour has a good hoppiness, nicely hoppy, slightly burning. Some marmalade. Good sweet flavour balanced by a sharp and burning hoppiness. 8 4 8 3 18

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours an opaque black with a brownish head. Heavy dark roast aroma combined with dark dried fruits. Solid body, again heavy dark roast, bitter chocolate and licorice. A touch of vanilla. Malt bitter finish combined with alcohol. Honestly just a heavy Imperial Stout - no more complex or sophisticated than so many others. 180212
