It’s not often that a great summer swell coincides with a full moon, but when they collide, nature affords us a rare opportunity to paddle out long after everyone has called it a day. These moments are a solitary pursuit with empty lineups, but those who carve graceful lines under a full moon understand how things can be dark lonely and rewarding at the same time.

So next time you paddle in from an overcrowded beach break, remember that nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a session. We suggest a glass of this smooth roasty black lager for contemplating empty lineups and waves that go on for days. Most likely, you’ll long for epic summer swells under moon lit sessions opening the doors to isolation and empty secret spots of an age trying to pass us by.

22 ounce bottle shared by cdumler. Pours a very dark color with a medium brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and caramel with a bitter hop finish. Taste is bitter malts, roasted coffee and chocolate. Medium bodied. Very nice.

Bottle from Ledgers Liquors. It’s sublabeled MIdnight Sessions. Same ABV. Black, black, black, with a passing tan head. Aroma of dark malt and coffee. Near fullbodied with creamy carbonation. It thins as the carbonation leaves. It’s got coffee and burnt toast. Makes me think somewhat of the old, long gone, Guinness. Burnt. Yeah. Great finish. Do these guys ever make a mediocre beer?

OTH tasting 09/06/08. Pours very dark kind of amber-garnet with thin tan head. The aroma is mild with some roastiness and nuttiness to go along with more subtle notes that are tough to discern due to their smoothness and lack of strength. The taste is much the same with very tasty roasted malts, well rounded nuttiness and notes of chocolate malts. As with the nose there are more subtle notes in the flavor that are tough to pin down. This is really tasty with rich and varied malts and moderate nuttiness.

On tap served by Tomme. Apperently this is Serpents Stout runoff mash. Great, easy drinking Dark Lager. Pours with a thick, light brown head covering a very dark brown body. Roasted malt aroma that is a little salty. Taste is coffee and a bit salty but still finishes quite sweet. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel, but still goes down great.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha head with excellent retention leaves no lacing as it recedes to skim surface. Dusty cocoa aromas. Smoked sweet malts with a lasting bittersweet finish.

Sampled at Dickinsonbeer’s Hoboken gathering - cloudy dark brown - highly roasty aroma, notes of vanilla, loads of espresso bitterness - kind of bitter and ashy, but the vanilla sweetness adds a decent counterpoint - some burnt sugars and light tobacco quality - tastes more like a stout than a black lager, but a good one.

Tasted at the Lupulin Reunulin at the Brickskeller. Tomme Arthur said this was brewed with the mash run off from a Serpent Stout batch. Pours a watery, although opaque black with a faint, slightly tan head. Smells smoky and wheaty with chocolate and coffee in the nose. Flavor is heavy on the coffee with nuts, toast and cocoa all combining. Finish is clean with just a bit of lasting coffee bitterness. Lighter and crisper than a stout, but very similar in terms of flavor profile.
