330ml bottle. Pours almost black with a tan head - looks like a porter. Aroma has dark/ stewed fruits and berries, spices and leaves. Sweet and rather heavy with complex fruits, chocolate and lingering spices. Finish has anise and hops but it’s still too sweet for me. Reminded me of some Dubbels I didn’t much like but I can’t put my finger on why. [2.9] 750ml bottle, 10C. Dark brown with a large quivering dome of a light tan head. Aroma has aniseed, lemon, cloves, cardamon, brown sugar. Taste is sweet (stewed dark fruits) and quite spicy with aniseed, vanilla, galangal. Lighter and spicier than the last one with pepper joining aniseed late in the finish. Alcohol well hidden. A lot better for me fresh and cool, it would seem.

From the rare beer club. Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with faint ruby highlight and a huge khaki head that lingered forever and produced great lacing. The aroma was sweet tart cherries, vanilla and toasty malts. The aroma was tart and tangy with strong sour cherry, vanilla and malted milk and a yeasty undertone and hints of Dr Pepper. The finish was long with notes of cherry and vanilla. Full bodied. Very good.

Very dark red-black colour. Prominent scent of aniseed in the aroma and in the flavour. Thick, rich, oily texture.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a decent beige head. Aroma is magnificent, dark fruit, liquorice, sweet, antique shop smell. Tastes of dark fruit, spice, caramel, malt, chocolate, cherry. A rich, warming Belgian masterpiece.

Brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel and molasses with a fruity note of pears. Sweet sugary flavour with some fruit, herbs and spices.

Aroma: Yeasty, dark fruits, alcohol, herbs/spices, a bit of caramel, and some roasted malts
Appearance: Dark brown color, light (somewhat lingering) tan/light brown head, creamy lacing
Flavor: Sugary, sweet malts that are fruity, with some raisin flavor, and a bit of chocolate, some spice hops and alcohol in the finish (though not as pronounced as in the nose)
Palate: Medium body, with an interesting mouthfeel, decent longevity of finish
Overall Impression: This was an enjoyable Belgian beer, a nice bit of complexity here, subtle, but good. Not quite what I was expecting when I opened the bottle, but a good beer none the less, and pretty unique from what I have tried. Quite a good deal at under $5 for a 750 ml bottle!

draft at In De Wildeman in Amsterdam - Pours dark brown with a thin, lingering, off-white head. Aroma is malty with dark fruit. It tastes sweet with notes of anise, caramel, and dark fruit. This medium bodied beer stays sweet right into the finish without getting syrupy. Very nice.

On tap @ Cafe Belgique. Dark brown, almost black body with a nice beige head. Aroma is nice and complex with sweet, light roasted malt, fruit, spices and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is complex as well, swet malt, caramel, fruit, yeast, spices and a gentle, bitter finish. Really nice.

bottle, pours dark brown with a two finger tan head. Aromas of vanilla, brown sugar, and licorice. Flavors are mild with some sweet dark malt, a light hop bitterness, and a burnt honey/candy sugar note. Some alcohol in the finish which ends with a lingering sweetness on the back of the tongue.

Brought back from Belgium, bought at the brewery. Pours dark brown, with brownish head. Aroma, dark fruits, caramel malts. Taste, dark fruits (prune and cherry), hoppy and yeasty, medium carbonation. Cane sugar. A really fine ale filled with nice flavors.
