11th October 2008. GABF. Clear gold - amber beer. A nice barleywine if a little over dry in the palate. Aromatic malt and a warming finish.

12oz bottle. Glowing brown-amber color. Rugged, sugary, alcohol laced dark fruit aroma. Deep sticky malt taste, some dark fruit. A pretty nice example of the style, though certainly not for the inexperienced palate. Some residual dryness comes through, giving it a nice English character. Full of classic Barleywine brutality, but still remains drinkable. Well done.

Bottled. A hazy deep red beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, berries, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, berries, and hops, leading to a very bitter finish. The alcohol leaves a light burn on the tongue. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Hazy amber color; medium head. Very nice aroma, the typical American Strong Ale, with a lot of caramel and resiny hops, but this time it’s also extremely creamy, and a bit earthy. Very good body, smooth; the flavor has strong caramel, maybe medium sweet but with strong alcohol (a bit too much), followed by the usual strong hopping, quite resiny, and with some bitter oranges; there is also a touch of vegetables, not pleasant but hidden by the rest. There is something a bit confusing here, but overall it’s a very good beer.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective Barley Wine tasting on 03/14/2009: This Barley Wine pours a hazy copper color with a medium thin khaki colored head that burns away steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt, toffee and fruit. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, citrusy hops and a bit of chocolate. The finish is chocolate malt and tangy hops. Pretty good overall.

Bottle: Deep amber pour with a thick & creamy beige head. Creamy sheets of lacing. Fruity and caramel in the nose, also a bit sweet and bready. Tastes malty with some vinous fruit. Sugary and sweet, some light citrus bitters. Then it seems as if the tail is more of a floral bitter. Standard transition as it warmed, very drinkable. Thanks pepsican.

Fizzy dark copper beer, with a few soapy bubbles at the top - aroma of syrup-soaked cherries, brown sugar, a bit of vanilla - the flavor is quite similar - starts out quite sweet and fruity, followed by some rolled oats, caramel, fig, date - finishes with some hop bitterness and alcohol warmth - a little bit of grainy character in the end - reminds me a bit of bigfoot with some age on it, but lacking a bit of that beers character - still nice, though.
