We like to think that 15 years is a good enough reason to make a wee bit of a song and dance - or at the very least a really monumental beer for the cellar-bratory ages!

So in 2015, our quindecennial year as a brewery, we created a limited edition Russian Imperial Stout, XV. It has been cellared (upright, of course - we do things a wee bit differently from our vinetarian cousins) over the past year and, just like this brewery, XV has improved with age!

As if we needed further proof of its royal pedigree, XV won a silver medal in the Porter & Stout category at The Brewers Guild of NZ Awards in September 2015. Since then, XV has been sitting in the cellar honing those award-inducing rich, chocolatey, malty flavours. The result? Spectacular.

Za zda-ró-vye!

Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Taste: Strong chocolate with hints of dried fruit and brioche. Smooth on the palate with chocolate aroma.

Hops: Simcoe, Amarillo.

Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley malts.

Bottled (from Alko). Black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, roasted notes, ashes, mild chocolate with some rye bread and alcohol to it. Flavour is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, some alcohol sweetness with mild dried fruits and some bitter grassy and floral elements too.

500ml bottle. Jet black colour with slightly late awakening, average to huge, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Roasty, roasty-spicy, slightly chocolately, minimally smoky, dark malty and grassy, citrusy hoppy aroma, something like Double Black IPA impressions at first sniff, notes of black chocolate, couverture, coffee, orange-flavoured dark chocolate, green onion, a touch of liquorice and peat. Taste is sweet-ish, chocolately and bitter, roasty dark malty, minimally smoky, ashy, and slightly citrusy hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, orange flavoured chocolate, subtle layers of caramel and toffee, white coffee, a touch of liquorice. Rather thin, oily texture, smooth and soft palate, very fine carbonation. Highly hopped, well balanced and integrated at the same time - more than satisfactory on the occasion of a 15th anniversary.

Opaque colour, good steady brownish head and lace. Aroma has coffee, rye bread and toasted, almost burned notes. Full-bodied. Roasted, a bit burned malty with dark coffee and chocolate. Alcohol picks up in the aftertaste. Quite heavy, roasted impy for cold winter evenings. A bit too burned to be world class for my liking.

A black beer, a head is quite big and beautiful, dense, creamy and brown. Aroma has smooth salt liquorice, dark and dried fruits, some chocolate and strenght of alcohol. Powerful. Taste has salt liquorice, sweetness of malts, dry roastiness and coffee, also bitterness, hint of dried fruitness. Full bodied, not stickyness, creamy and smooth. Great salt liquorice, smooth and enjoyable, strenght and so easily to enjoy.

(Bottle, 0.5 l - bottled on 14 August 2015, at One Pint Pub, 20170715) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had liquorice, dark chocolate, burnt malts and sweetness. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, liquorice, dark chocolate, sweetness, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A tasty balanced imperial stout that hid its rather high ABV very well.
