We like to think that 15 years is a good enough reason to make a wee bit of a song and dance - or at the very least a really monumental beer for the cellar-bratory ages!
So in 2015, our quindecennial year as a brewery, we created a limited edition Russian Imperial Stout, XV. It has been cellared (upright, of course - we do things a wee bit differently from our vinetarian cousins) over the past year and, just like this brewery, XV has improved with age!
As if we needed further proof of its royal pedigree, XV won a silver medal in the Porter & Stout category at The Brewers Guild of NZ Awards in September 2015. Since then, XV has been sitting in the cellar honing those award-inducing rich, chocolatey, malty flavours. The result? Spectacular.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Taste: Strong chocolate with hints of dried fruit and brioche. Smooth on the palate with chocolate aroma.
Hops: Simcoe, Amarillo.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley malts.

[6/17] Bottle. Black with a large tan head that slowly settles to an inch. Aroma is assertive and maybe slightly solventy with grapefruit, gooseberries and pine over heavy roast and brioche. 8- Silky, lowish carbonation. Just luxuriantly mouthfilling with everything having a place and nothing crowding anything else. In addition to what’s in the aroma there’s a sweet Indian spiced (cardamon) and milky mocha running underneath. The aroma could settle a little more over the next year or so but it’s superb now, with more depth than I thought Tuatara could garner. [4.1][5/18] Aroma still very hoppy and now slightly rummy. Lots of everything - roast, pine, bitterness, choc brioche, spices - but it all works together. In some ways sad it's my last bottle but not sure it will improve.

500ml bottle. Pours like crude oil: thick and pitch black. Decent dark brown head that falls away in peaks over several minutes. Port, figs, raisins, coffee, smoke, charcoal, oats, chocolate. Long bitter roasty finish. Big flavours in the sweet, bitter and umami departments. Huge, tasty, incredible complexity. Everything it should be and more.
