Vollmundig, gut! 12/13/12/12/11/13

75cl bottle from ABCBeers, shared @ JulyTHT. Aged 6 months at the suggestion of the brewer. Thick creamy tan head. Clear black pour. Sour notes. I think it would have been better fresh. I don’t get the hops, just the tartness

Bottle. Aroma bubble gum, roasted, hay, barnyard. Very dark colour, stable head. Taste is roasted and bretty. Obviously quite young. The roasted malt is too up-front and the sourness is too rough and biting. However the beer is still enjoyable. 2013 bottle. Definitely recommend to age it a few years.

Pours dark brown and quite cloudy, murky. There’s a small-medium beige head. It’s a hot day, so that might have had an impact, but the head faded pretty quickly to nothing. Now, it’s just a glass of liquid, the color of mud. The aroma is rather nice. You can almost ignore the roasted barley aspect. Citrus and floral hops and a whole bunch of fruity brett stuff going on. The brett and hops are kicking up peaches, grapes, pineapples, tangerines, roses, lavender, mint - these lists always sound made up, but it’s just what comes to mind as I sit here navel-gazingly writing down what comes to mind. Anywho, there’s also darker malt fruitiness, which is nice enough but already seems unnecessary. Unfortunately, that fruity dark malt note has an even bigger impact on the taste. It starts off with light fruit flavors from the hops and brett, but then deeper malt flavors - still quite fruity but it’s the fruitiness of brett working on roasted malt - start to kick in. It sorta picks up a metallic flavor, though I think that’s just the dark malt being odd. Light bitterness. Mouthfeel is heavier than I’d like. The beer just never dries out enough to get all that light. It just tastes like a really nice brett IPA spoiled by some dark malt. ABA, Black IPA, etc. isn’t my favorite style, but I’ve found a few that I’ve liked. The roasted malt flavor just doesn’t work for me with this one, though.

Bottle at Culmination Fest: Poured a brown with off white colored bubbles. Aroma is strong citrus hops with lots of funky sourness to it. The taste was very funky bitter with more citrus fruit character, but also had some malty depth that balanced.

Tap at Maxs. Oily balsamic sour beer. Brown. Oily cherry vinegar notes. Woody. One-dimensional. Good, but pretty similar to the plethora sour bombs than I don’t hold it that high of regard.
