Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich and, well, sinful, you might worry that you'll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in making it...you'll have to add that on your own. This massive and intensely aromatic beer abounds with notes of chocolate, coffee, black currants, anise and roastiness, and its heavy palate is nothing to be trifled with.
We haven’t changed this recipe much from the original version that Stone President & co-founder Steve Wagner created in 2000. It’s a fantastic beer, and we love brewing it every year!

Can. Color: Black, brown head. Aroma: Roasted malt, coffee, licorice. Taste: Dark roasted malt, some licorice, coffee and dark chocolate. Sweetish but definitely not too sweet. Strong bitter hoppy backbone. Dense mouthfeel. Smooth. Over moderate sweet and over moderate to medium bitterness. Full body, below average carbonation. Very long lasting bitter and dry finish. Stone Brewing keeps amazing me. Great IRS!

Nice roast! Chocolate malts, light bitterness. Not sure if this is actually different than the Russian imperial stout because it's been so long since I had RIS. Really nice stuff.

A surprise selection at Mr. T's on the east side of Midland yesterday. I did not know that Stone was offering any imperial stouts, had read they had gone the total IPA route. So this makes me happy, at least I get to try the original imperial stout. Nuff said, life goes on. 12 oz can opened now and going inside of my New Belgium globe glass. Motor oil or some similar substance as the liquid with a large head of medium brown foam, very persistent. I smell dark fruit and chocolate. The drink is good, even a bit better than that. But not great. Dark chocolate, a small but noticeable amount of coal, some berry sweetness, a touch of caramel, wheat bread and malt. Slightly bitter. A nice mouth feel. Decent in the style, not life changing.

I finally got the chance to try Stone Imperial Russian Stout at Aces and Ales in LV while there on a visit. By itself the brew would have been worth the tasting but I had the chance to also drink two other high quality barrel aged imperial stouts at the same time. The color is black as aces with a medium tan head. Nice lacing with this one. I taste a heathy dose of chocolate of course, licorice, strawberries and malt. Easy on the tongue. Quite good, not the best.
