This India Red Ale features four US varieties of them – Ahtanum, Citra, Cascade and Amarillo for those at the front – and in such quantities that the beer clocks up 60 IBU on the bitterness scale. That said, one of their reps tells us the bitterness seems even higher, so look out, hop fiends. It’s a bright red beer that’s dominated by citrus and spice.

Look at that lovely dirty brown head, that ruby red body. The aroma is lovely roasted malts with dry biscuits, honey, floral notes and a little hop bitterness. In the mouth it’s really well balanced - the palate is creamy and thick and there’s a really nice hop presence with a toasty aftertaste. You do taste the alcohol a little but that’s a minor criticism - it is 6.6% after all.

Pours ruby-tinted copper with a fading head.Nose shows toasty, syrupy malt with some bready notes too. Also a fair whack of pine and resinous hops.Lovely malt flavours too. Quite syrupy, a fair bit of sweetness and bready malt. More pine and grapefruit.Overcarbonated for this kind of malt presence.

Bottle from Bottle Shop at home. Surprisingly brown (rather than red/amber) pour with just a bit of reddish color. Dense foamy head. Fruit - pineapple and orange - and a bit of piney hops aroma. Taste is less hoppy than the aroma suggests and more malty, but does have bitter piney hoppiness. Sweeter malty finish. Quite good.

Dark reddish brown with a large pale beige head. Aroma is toffeeish with lovely floating floral and red grapefruit tones, a little pine. Not a hop bomb. Soft, creamy texture with gentle carbonation. Sweet with sticky bread crusts, citrus gives way to pine and some spices at a bitter finish that creeps up in intensity after a while. Good.

(Bottle) Clear deep mahogany reddish brown with decent tan head. Lovely aroma mixing caramel with pine, floral and citrus. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Flavour is complex and evolves. The start is pleasant mix of dark toffee and citrus notes, and then the hops start to make their appearance. Initially there is some fairly restrained peppery spice; this is followed up by some more aggressive but pleasant hoppy bitterness in the finish. An unusual and impressive beer.
