St. Bernardus Abt 12 is widely regarded as one of the best beers in the world. It is therefore no surprise that it is our brewery’s flagship beer, ranked at the very top of the St. Bernardus beer hierarchy. It is brewed in the classic quadrupel style and adheres to the original 1946 recipe. This is a dark beer with a robust head that is ivory in colour. EBC 60.

Pours dark mahogany to light brown in colour, with a couple of fingers of a rather dense slightly off-white head, that shows good retention and lacing. Complex aroma shows lightly roasted, nutty and caramel malts, dried fruits and ripe banana, brown sugary sweetness. Taste is overall pretty high in sweetness but still in good balance for the style. Taste notes as per aroma, with a warming feel in the background. ABV is perfectly hidden. The beer is overall complex, warming and satisfying. I'm not a huge fan of that residual sugary and banana-like sweetness that you get in some belgian strongs though, and this one definitely has some. Medium to dense bodied with medium carbonation, in an overall full mouthfeel, possibly a bit less creamy than usual per style. Not exactly my benchmark for what a belgian strong dark should be, but undoubtedly a well-crafted and complex beer.

Alltid en glede! Det er noe tilfredstillende med belgiske øl i klosterstil. De er tidløse og konsistente, uten å være motepreget. Og akkurat dette er et av de beste.

From bomber, pours clear mahogany with huge dense tan head. Full bodied. Dark fruit yeasty banana aroma. Caramel banana raisin malty taste. Sweet banana finish with some hops bitterness to it.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a very dark chestnut colour, a tint of ruby with a medium to thin dissipating beige head. A fair bit of sediment in the glass. Aromas of dry dark fruits, caramel, molasses, liquorice, brown sugar, brown bread and a bit of spice. Taste has all the notes from the aroma with added notes of plums and berries. Medium to full bodied. High carbonation on the palate creates a fizzy mouthfeel with a lovely dark fruity long lasting aftertaste. Well balanced. Very slightly sweet but not overly so it is just right. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. it is a great strong Quad certainly one of the best i have tried.
