From a 640ml bottle on 18/1/2014. Pours a very dark copper with a small head. Even when warmed, the aroma is perhaps slightly subdued for something so big - a fair whack of toffee malt and a dash of dark fruit. It’s not subdued in the mouth, where is is massively sweet (toffee, caramel and butterscotch), and is followed by a fairly blunt, very warming alcohol led bitterness. The texture is creamy and the carbonation medium. Another Woolies special through this brewer, it comes in a lovely tin box and looks the goods. It’s actually not a bad barley wine and it’s great to see the brewing of this stuff being encouraged and being made available to the masses. It’s not overly sophisticated or subtle (indeed it packs quite a punch), and doesn’t compare to top flight brews in this style, but it’s quite enjoyable none the less.

Bottle, 14C. Clear bronze with an off white head that retreats to the rim after a while. Aroma of rich toffee, toast, muscatels, vanilla and orange peel. Alcohol sticks out a bit. Slightly creamy, fairly syrupy, low carbonation. Rich and sweet with toasty toffee that’s a little buttery, dried fruit, firm orange-accented bitterness. Vanilla and drying oak at the end. Some heat. A little overbearing at the moment, may well develop.
