Picked this one up at the brewery on a lark and expected to hate it. It turned out to be a ripper. Sarsparilla is more prominent in the aroma than the aniseed. There's also biscuit, bread, lemon. I get much more of the licorice in the mouth, but it's nicely balanced with some caramel, bread and cocoa. I really enjoyed this one, and would definitely go back.

Pours black with a fading head.Nose shows liquorice, sarsparilla, soft sweet bready notes. Very strong sarsparilla.Flavours are more focused on the malt. Some roasty malt and toast notes with sarsparilla and aniseed behind. A herbal astringency is noticeable in the finish.Needs a thicker body, feels watery at the moment.

Bottle. Almost black with a small tan head. Aroma of aniseed balls, cola, chocolate. Sweet with chocolate, nuts and treacle, much lighter herbal notes than suggested by the aroma. Dry finish, moderate bitterness. Spices linger agreeably. Didn’t find the aroma all that inviting, but enjoyable and interesting after that.
