Tuatara Brewing from New Zealand and Beerhere from Denmark laugh at the tyranny of distance. They’ve come together over 18,000kms to create Hopcat, a hoppy red ale brewed with the brand new kiwi hop, Waimea. Debuting in a flash of bright orange with an off-white head, Hopcat releases hop aromas of pine and strawberry. The flavour is bready malts and caramelised sugars while the long finish leaves a rich and decadent mouthfeel. If you really want Hopcat to purr, serve it between 7-9 degrees C.

This is a ripping beer to look at but there’s something slightly wrong about the nose, with the smell of rubber reacting badly with the pine and some light nougat. The flavour is much more palatable, with lovely soft hops that provide a surprisingly tart lemon aftertaste. There’s a nice caramel nougat malt flavour with some spearmint residing in the back of the throat. This one’s just a nose clip away from perfection.

Pours dark amber with a fading head.Nose shows grassy, herbal and fruity hops with a bit of lychee and peach. Also some sweet malt with a hint of biscuity, toasty malt.Very similar flavours, sweet malt, soft toasty notes, grassy herbal hops. Pretty sweet, maybe a bit heavy-handed on crystal malt?Could use more carbonation.

Bottle. Amber with an inch of off-white head. Aroma of toasty caramel, berries, pepper, peach and resin. Light bodied, highish carbonation. Sweet caramel and berries, resinous and peppery bitter finish rushes up. Refreshing. A little thin, but nice hops.

Bottled. A red beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, spicy hops, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, spicy hops, citrus fruits, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.
