Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours an opaque dark brown with only a vague tint of orange, oddly fizzy and dissipating brown head. Thick, thick almost tarry coffee aroma. Medium body, heavy - almost vulgar - carbonation, the kids that keeps on bubbling all the way down your throat. Heavy, charry coffee accents - kinda like burned coffee. A little vanilla before a very malt bitter finish. A really tough beer to drink. 301112

Volcanic opening.Pours pitch black with a large, dark tan head.Nose shows hefty coffee, rich roasted malt and oatmeal. Very tempting!Similar flavours: rich roasted malt characters, espresso and earthy sweet coffee. A nice amount of underlying sweetness too.Great creamy carbonation.Amazing how much roasted complexity while keeping things approachable. Ridiculously drinkable.

Bottle, slight gusher. 14C. Black with a large tan head that fades to a good coat. Coffee and chocolate aroma with some pine. Oily mouthfeel. Woah, caffeine! Taste is barely sweet, but there’s some fudginess to the chocolate. Lots of coffee. Firm bitterness means that the astringency of the coffee doesn’t quite dominate.

From a 330ml bottle on 27/5/2012. Pours close to black with a massive thick tan head (gushed a little). Has a huge aroma of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt, with a touch of smoke. The flavour follows suit with masses of bitter dark roast coffee, sweet chocolate, cocoa and a little caramel. Exhibits an excellent sweet/bitter balance. Has a long roasty hop finish. The body is medium. My only criticism is that its a tad over carbonated. Otherwise, this an outstanding stout with explosive flavour. HopDog is one Aussie craft brewer showing heaps of promise and a willingness to make beers with real character.
