"I think I'm getting the Black Lung pop. It's not very well ventilated down there". This really, really, ridiculously good looking bourbon barrel-aged peated stout will leave you gasping for that last breath of clean air before succumbing to the intense roasty smoke flavour. The Black Lung is best enjoyed with a ventilator.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge but fast disappearing dark brown head. The aroma has notes of smoke, bourbon, roasted malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of bacon, smoke, roasted malt, and bread, leading to a dry smokey finish.

33 cl bottle. Pours pitch black with a huge, fizzy and tan head. Aroma is smoked and roasted dark malty. Solid roasted malty and smoked. Warming bourbon note too. Thick smoked and roasted to smooth bourbon dense malty finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of maneliquor. Pours an opaque pitch black with a lively if dissipating light brown head. Bourbon and peat in the nose. Medium body, violent carbonation, roast, peat, ink and iodine with an ashy roastiness. Malt bitter finish. Another interesting Moon Dog beer if somewhat out of control! 030612

Pours black with a ridiculously large head, even after a gentle pour.Nose shows peat, camp-fire smoke, charcoal. Very cigar-like. Way too much peat though, and the real problem is that there’s an enteric, blue-vein cheese character to it, which only seems to get stronger as you go.The enteric character is not quite as noticeable in the flavours, but there’s still too much peat, smoke and booze.Obviously there’s quality control issues here, and obviously not what the brewer intended. From what I’ve heard though this defect isn’t likely to be a one-off. I’d like to try an uninfected bottle in the future if I can find some, I’d been looking forward to this.

Bottle. Black with a tan head that fades to a coat quickly then disappears. Aroma of molasses, whisky, vanilla, peat, licorice, wood. Really quite fizzy, medium bodied. Quite dry, with coffee, spices, and whisky notes as well as burnt toffee, dark berries, some peat. Finishing bitterness builds. Mouthfeel improves quite a bit after letting it sit for a while. Good enough to be slightly frustrating they haven’t quite got the bottling right yet. [3.5] Another, bought at the same time. Maybe the last had not come into condition? - but no. Semi gusher, crackling head settles to a tan half-inch for a while, then fizzes away. Mouthfeel again improves after a few swirls. Mostly same as above - no weird chitlins notes in this one.
